Can't play with friends, help

I was really happy to see wing missions finally coming to the live servers, since me and my friends couldn't play together because of constant connection issues.
I'm not an expert when it comes to servers, connection and such. Far from it.

Every time I tried to play a mission with ANY of my friends, literally any of them, we couldn't manage to drop out of SC in the same instance. I was hoping wing missions would fix this for us but, surely enough, it's still broken :(

Now, I don't know if this has to do with my game or my connection to the game because when I watch people playing online they seem to be fine, but I'm definetly not. Even the wing beacon doesn't work properly, when I activate it and a friend tries to pop on my location, he ends up somewhere else in the area, and then we find each other again in SC.

Any ideas ? Am I part of a minority or is this affecting everybody ? I usually play alone, so I can't tell you how long this has been going on for, I'm not sure.

Welcome to Frontier's Peer To Peer Model. This has been going on for only four years now, so, it's a new bug.

It's on their list, but they will only look at it if they have time, and only if it generates enough interest. :)

let you or your friend drop (station, USS...etc) while in a wing

when he dropped look at your comm panel and click to "engage wing-nav beacon"

I regularly play with friends, sometimes i only see their wake in supercruise but it's a lot better than it used to be

Hope it helps

edit; the end of your post mentionned the wing beacon stuff... nevermind :x

it happens to me too, if you always keep the nav beacon engaged you usually drop hundreds of km away.

1/ make sure you have your wing beacon activated on your right panel (function tab)

2/ wait for your friend to drop, wait 3 sec and then engage his nav beacon

you will "normally" drop few hundreds meters from him.

You must engage the nav lock after your wingman dropped (preferably after the dropping animation)

Are you friends located in the same geographical area? If not, what about using a VPN? I had a mate in Australia who i could only wing with when he was using a VPN.

Out at the main menu under options is a section called Network.

Check if uPnP is detected by the game and enabled, and get all your wing mates to check as well.

Some old tricks that used to work in the past and might still help :

- ensure all Clients are freshly started (physically shutdown and reboot Computers), since ELITE can have some nasty garbage collection and caching issues
- open up and use a Private Group, as this tries to enforce Instancing

- identify which Players can instance with which others
-> then use that knowledge to sort out which Player has to enter any Instance first, so others can join (can happen that Player 1 can't join Player 2 into an Instance - but it actually works the way around)
-> give 5-10sec before joining other Wing Members already in the instance (compensates for lag to afford clean Client/Wing/Server propagation)
(Wing Members should join one-by-one instead of attempting a direct NAV-Lock join)

- disable UPnP (which is a Network Security hazard anyway)
-> enable manual Port Forwarding instead

- check with Wing mates to see if they either all use IPv4 or all IPv6... if found mismatched, try to sync
- check MaxMTU used by all Clients, a setting of 1472 used by all Players should afford a smooth experience

- check any existing Firewall logs for signs of blocked Traffic

- for advanced ELITE Users, enable Verbose Netlog and analyze the logfiles for any identified causes of instancing failure

That doesn't make lots of sense to me but I'll try it out ! Thanks :)

He's in the country right next to mine, shouldn't be that much of a problem ?

Thanks for the detailed post, I'll go through these steps and see if it makes it any easier !
