Newcomer / Intro Can't Plot Route In Galaxy Map Error Help Please!

Hi guys,

Haven't been playing for very long, only a few days and I'm stuck trying to do a delivery mission, I'm in my sidewinder and the outfitting is the 'default loaned' throughout. I have a cargo full of water purifiers but that doesn't weigh much I shouldn't think. I am trying to plot a route on the galaxy map from Trevithick Dock in LHS 3447 to the system 'LTT18486', this jump route is only 6.96ly away from my present location and the plot route keeps failing. previously with some routes I had an orange line which became dotted but it would allow a very long route with refuelling, now this will not even happen. Yet another route to the Alrai Sector KH-V B2-2 which is 9.30ly away is being plotted, but with no dotted lines though.

I am confused and I think maybe a system error might be happening? I did change my weapon type but then I changed it back to the original fitting. Does anyone know what might be wrong or should I cancel this mission? which is never good for your standing, especially when starting out?

Thanks in advance for your help.

Hi, sorry you have trouble.
Look at the right panel, Functions tab. In the lower left part it tells you your current jump range.
Also when you look at the map, then unless you fiddled with filters, all systems you can jump into will be connected with your system by a thin blue line.

Every unit of any commodity weight exactly 1 tonne. (They are sold in the same containers)
Four tonnes are quite a load, for a Sidewinder, actually, so I think your problem IS the jump range, which, of course, gets shorter the heavier your ship is.

If you want to avoid that, you can try plotting the route before you accept the mission that requires you to haul cargo. When you are plotting the route in the galaxy map, there is a "Cargo" slider at the bottom of the second tab from the left (Under where you choose economic or fastest routes) which allows you to "simulate" full load and shortens the jump range so you can check whether you can make the trip, before accepting the cargo.

Anyway, have you just started, or do you have at least some money, already?
If you do, there's an easy way out - go to Outfitting and change as many of your modules as you can from E-rated (stock) to D-rated (check the rating to the next to the name, but be sure to buy the same Class (the number, or the number of dots) D-rated stuff is lighter and will help you with the range. If you have more money, buy the best rated (E is the worst, A is the best) Frame shift drive you can afford.
That will help you to get enough jump range.

If you don't have any money, you can at least try selling the guns (under the "Hardpoints" category) and your basic discovery scanner (in Optional compartments) that will also make your ship lighter.

^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^ WOT Chris said ^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^

Plus - move away from LHS 3447 anyway - if you take missions requiring you to return to a station there from another system then you have the pain of a very long travel from arrival to the destination.

Second - Did you get the 10000 credit gift mission when you first started? If not then it could still be available for you if you check your comms screen (keyboard 2 shortcut) and the "email" tab (use "Q" and "E" to get to that tab.

P.S. Welcome ;)

Also a good idea to upgrade the 2E Frame Shift Drive (FSD) to at least a 2D as soon as you can.
From the stats at https://coriolis.edcd.io/outfit/sidewinder (although not sure if this is the same as the starting loaned sidewinder) it has a fully laden (ship hull + modules + fuel + cargo) jump range of 6.96 LY.
It could be when you changed your weapons setup you may have chosen a weapon with a higher mass or you have more than 4 tonnes of cargo, which would take you below the 6.96 LY range.

Fly safe CMDR, o7.

Sounds like you may have filters on your galaxy map. Make sure filters (third button on galaxy map, use dropdown) are set to none and then replot your route.

Hi guys,
thank you very much for your very quick and very helpful responses and advice, really appreciate that! I guess this tells me that it may not be the glitch I suspected and that it is a game play function I have yet to learn, so I'll test everything you have all told me, sure they may all be correct and will probably solve the issue.

Thank you very much once again!!
cheers,
DT :)

Hi,
Just to let you know, I upgraded my FSD to category C of the same class and then the route plotting worked just fine.

Thanks very much for the solution.

cheers,
