Newcomer / Intro Can't plot routes?

I'm trying to get to Arigens system to drop off my Empire bounty in my Federation space but I can't plot ANY routes to get remotely close to it, it's fairly close though. Do I have to increase my jump ranges or what? Also, I know picked up an Alliance bounty while trying to search for a way to get closer to Arigens since it wouldn't let me plot routes so now I'm stuck with 10k worth of bounties I can't even turn in...

Did you try go open Galaxy map, search for Arigens system, point your mouse on the system and when drop menu appears, select 2nd icon. If you can't establish a route, maybe you don't have enough fuel for the next jump.

Yep, that's exactly what I did, there was a pretty large gap between two jump points that I think even exceeded my jump range even on a full tank of gas

Did you wait for your computer to calculate the various routes? I think it does it by radial distance from each star, so it plots them quickly at the start but slows with a logarithmic regression, due to the number of stars, so it can take time past 50Ly to get the various paths plotted on your screen, particularly if you have it set to "fastest route".

It's not so much gas in tank, as it is capabilities of FSD. Buy a better one for longer jumps and/or reduce weight.

I believe it won't plot beyond 100LY's & I too had trouble getting it to plot when the destination is beyond 60LY's, my friend kept saying just wait, it will update, but many times it does not, so this is the trick I found works every time.

In your galaxy map, click on Navigation. First thing CHANGE JUMP DATA TO FASTEST ROUTES!! In the search box at the top, type in the system name you want (must be spelled exact). Once the map adjust to that location, select it (puts the orange marker over it). Now hit the current location arrow to bring the map view back to where you are (with a blue marker over it).

Now use your left & right mouse buttons to line up the blue & orange markers.. blue in the foreground, orange in the distance. Using your W key & right mouse button, begin to move the map view toward the orange marker. As you do this, hover over systems, you will notice the plot is available. Keep moving toward your destination & hovering over systems. This seems to update my ships plot computer more quickly. Once it no longer shows a plot course, I usually choose a system close to the destination it if is beyond 100LY's.

Sounds like a lot of work, but it only takes like 15/20 seconds to do this. I hope they get this fixed in the next patch. Hope this helps.

UPDATE: disregard & read post #8

How far is Arigens away from your current position? The route planer can only plot routes up to 100 LY and even then you have to wait a bit before these long routes can be plotted. Did you select fastest or economical route?

zoom out a little from your location, you should see the blue lines slowly expanding out from you in a sphere.

those lines will eventually stretch out to 100Ly

you can only get the map to plot a route if those lines have got close to your target

if you need to go further than 100Ly then you'll need to fly somewhere in between first

also note dotted lines mean you don't have enough fuel to get there

thanks, this actually works better than the method I posted...

i think we both covered some important points :)

sometimes it's nice to not wait for the full 100Ly range. something about 50Ly away is a lot quicker to calculate for and i think would in theory save you time. the only issue i have with that theory is i don't fancy handing about in open space while i plot the next leg. so i tend to combine things with a pit stop and ideally a bit of trading (love slopeys tool for helping me plot a route that makes money on the way)

I record refuel points and just refuel at outposts as spending money doesn't bother me overly much. TCed's method will work better for me to find the in between systems if I rotate the map to a vertical angle because trying to work it out when there's a 50Ly vertical difference is extremely frustrating. I think it will plot past 100Ly but the number of stars to calculate for increases cubically as it moves out so the time taken to calculate increases at that rate. To demonstrate what I mean, if you average 1 star per 7Ly radius then a search of 30Ly will average 78 stars but a 50Ly search will average 364 stars and a 100Ly search will average 2915. The program has to make the calculations for each of the stars and that takes time, more so if the stars are clustered. There are several locations on the map that have a massive group of close stars and the starting locations are very far from them. Hmmmm.... I wonder if any of them have rares :)

It's about 60-70LY away if I remember right, I even jumped from point to point to get to the closest jump point to Arigens and still wouldn't let me, now that I have an Eagle I'll try again, my jump range is more than 10LY now and have more fuel

Ok, Arigens is 46 light years from my current position, now that I'm in the Eagle it's letting me plot a course there and it'll only take 4 jumps to do so. Back in the Sidewinder it either wouldn't let me plot or when it did it was have well over 15 jumps

yeah, if your jump distance is really short then there will be areas that are just too sparse for you to navigate. now that you're up and running you'll probably upgrade the FSD on every new ship you get.
