Can't rank past recruit

I know everyone is probably sick of hearing about this, but i'm open to suggestions on how i can rank up with the federation millitary.

I've completed several "promotion" missions which claim to boost me to Cadet all of which changed nothing. Assassinate, Smuggle, etc.

Anything to look out for? Tips please because I can't trust anything that is said in-game.

The "go pick up some canisters of whatever from a wreck" missions seem to work, most of the time. Some of the time, anyway.

 

[Frop]

The only mission that actually worked for me so far was the "legit" cargo mission. The one where they want you to get something illegal (even though it's often a regular commodity) is bugged and so are all the others I tried (assassinations, courier, etc.).
