Cant reach destination - what am i doing wrong?

Try as i may I have not been able to complete 1 simple journey yet in over 5 hours of play. The rough steps i've taken are below, what am i missing?

1) Buy up commoities
2) Launch and leave station
3) Select destination system from map
4) Hyperspace
5) Lock to station and start to cruise
6) Deal with interdictions/proximity alarms as they occur
7) Drop out of cruise ~19,000 km

This is where my progfress stops. I hit full throttle, aim at the station, stars whiz by but all the time the distance to target is going UP.

I've tried this multiple times and left my machine whirring away for uyp to 30 mins with no progress. What am i missing here people?

I've search high and low for a basics guide but couldnt find anything

Are you perhaps going in reverse? There's a throttle reverse, look in your bindings, maybe you hit that by accident?

Also, I assume you meant 20km, because if you drop out at 20.000km you'd have to fly an hour or so to get there.

Drop out at 200 km, with a speed of 200km/s or (preferrably!) less. If you are this close, it should say "Destination Lock engaged", which places you pretty close to the station.

You need to get way closer than 19,000km... Disengage s supercruise when the blue notification appears in the target hologram at the bottom left. You should get as close as 100-200km
