Newcomer / Intro Can't see windshield frame or planet/sun...

I have 2 questions. Hopefully someone can help me with this.

1. As posted in the screenshot, there is a planet in front of me. I understand dark planets. But what would be helpful is if I could lighten up the windshield framing to at least see that. As you can see from the screenshot, I can't see either.

2. Also, in the screenshot below. What is that oscilloscope looking thing in the yellow circle? I know it represents a "Unidentified Signal Source" but is there a way to read this?

2.) It's the iconography for a "Signal". Just a picture to represent it, don't think there's much more to it than that.

In some areas, space can be quite dark.

However, from the screen shots, it looks like you additionally turned off orbit lines (right panel). The lines usually help to get some orientation as well, as being interrupted by the cockpit frame. Hence, with the lines turned on, you should be able get some impression about your cockpit frames positions.
