can't sell sidewinder, stuck forever storing multiple sidewinders?

I made mistake of buying another sidewinder - mistake as in I wanted to see if I could explore a bit using cheap sidewinder but decided that was bad idea.

The TL'DR question first is - why can't I SELL any sidewinder? Only option given is store for free, never sell.

Quick details
1 - stored my newbie starter sidewinder last week when I began game, in starter system for nostalgia sake. Cool, am fine with keeping this one sidewinder stored there

2 - upgraded to Cobra and used that as main ship
3 - stored my Cobra and bought new sidewinder to test exploring

4 - decided bad idea, wanted to sell sidewinder and use my old Cobra

Problem - I can take my Cobra out of storage no problem, but no matter what I do - I can't sell this sidewinder. I've left expensive parts on it (Advanced Discovery scanner) or stripped it bare - but every time when I view my Cobra in storage and click options, only choice I am given is retrieve my old ship and store current (sidewinder)

This is bothering the OCD part of me because I don't want a second sidewinder and the associated icon floating on my galaxy map forever. I thought because I had stripped the sidewinder down, it wasn't allowing me to sell, but I've tested adding really expensive parts like the advanced discovery scanner and still same thing.

Anyone know why I can't sell this or seemingly any sidewinder?

Driving me nuts, any help / info appreciated.

You need to buy a new ship, then go back into the shipyard and sell it.

Have you tried part-exchanging it, rather than selling it first?

It's odd though - your first starting Sidewinder is on loan from the Pilot's Federation, along with all its fittings. That's why you can't sell it and you get nothing for it when you part-exchange. Same with the fittings.

But if you paid for the second Sidewinder - that one you should be able to sell.

Try part-exchanging it for something else, like a Hauler... then sell the Hauler.

Well, completely by accident figured it out. I must say this is really odd design by Frontier.

I can sell a ship, any ship, as part of the exchange when I buy a ship, but can't do the same when I switch stored ships. I guess Frontier wants to have a game lock on you can never be without a ship, even if it is within the same zero time period as you sell a ship while taking ship out of storage at same time.

So while in my sidewinder, I had to swap ships with Cobra first and accept the store for free option on the sidewinder. Then when in my cobra, go back into the storage screen and now could sell my sidewinder.

Sorry, it sounded like you were already in your Cobra from your initial post. Yes, you have to not be in a ship to sell it. It has to be in storage first. Remember to strip off its fittings or downgrade them to E-rated - you lose 10% of the value of the ship and modules when you sell a ship currently, whereas you get all your money back from modules, whether sold or exchanged. They intend to change this at some point, but currently you lose more money if you sell a ship with its expensive fittings still on.
