Cant stop playing Elite on my Vive for last 3 weeks! But need BH help.

I thought my Vive was cool before I ever played E.D. But now Im obsessed with playing it all the time. Its a good thing Im retired ;) Dived in 3 weeks ago and started trading rares in a Sidey then a Hauler then a Lakon 6. I got better and better at navigating and landing. But the grind of hauling bored me . So I took my hard earned credits and bought a basic Vulture. I love this thing as much as my Miata!. I wanted to get into something more exciting like bounty hunting in RES for starters. Ive learned a lot here and on You Tube about BH. And am real comfortable with my CH HOTAS system. I went to a RES Low system in Elite Dangerous (not Horizons) and did very well. Then in Horizons went to the same type and lost a ship. (400,000 credits down the tube). Is the AI beefed up in the newest versions? I really would like to outfit the ship right, but at this rate I will end up in a Sidewinder unless I find a way to avoid this. HELP!

well, ai was beefed up, but not in the last month or two, I think it was several months ago at least. Couple things, wait til system authority engages, and keep out of the way! Also you tend to get more "attention" from enemies that you're firing on if you're doing more damage.

Want to play it really safe? find an enemy being fired on, scan it, get close and just wait til it's relatively close to gone before you fire

The NPCs also scale up their skill, based on your combat ranking. If you get better, they will too.

And yes, playing Elite in VR once, means playing it in VR forever :D

First, the Vive is really good for combat and an excellent way to learn the game. Second, you're retired and can play the game all day, every day? You son of a (jealous rage segment deleted [haha] )

Last, I've found difficulty changes in RES and CZ depending on the instance. I can be in a RES and spend an hour killing everything. I go to a station to cash in bounties, return the same RES and within seconds of arrival I hear the zummmm-whapp of multiple rail guns hitting my hull. They get me down to 23% and then I'm running for my life within three minutes of arrival. I repair, go back to the same RES and kill everything for an hour without issue.

If having problems, leave the NAV beacon, RES or CZ then re-enter. It won't reset if there are players in there, so you have to be alone, but I find doing that resets the AI. It may be a bug, I don't know, but it helps dial down the carnage at times.

Combat is really loads of fun in VR. The ships gain some weight, when they pass right next to you or when you almost hug them.
I am by no means an expert in combat. My thoughts for "safe" fighting with a smaller ship would be:
- have an agile ship -> be able to run away from threats if you're in a pinch. It can help to up your thrusters via engineers and up your power distributor to have the edge when trying to get out of a fight
- don't first-engage upon wings
- don't carry cargo if you wanna hunt for bounties, might as well disable the cargo hatch for minimal extra energy
- for safer play you can let other, bigger threats engage first
- high res seemed pretty good when you are in a cycle that spawns mostly (exclusively) big ships - with an agile ship they are relatively easy to hit, evade, or run away from if something should go wrong. Bounties are also higher.

Looking forward to playing it on my Vive... my main problem is the Vive is setup for room scale so I need to think of a good way to set that up without moving everything around each time. I also wanted to get comfortable with the hotas before pressing buttons blindly with the headset on! :)

Talk to her.
Oh, wait - bounty hunting? OK.
I'm fairly bad at combat but VR has helped a bunch. Just wait until the plod are all over the target and the shields are down, or nearly. Pile in, watch it go boom and look around for the next firework display.
If your shields get bruised, hold off before you engage again.
Always have a target planet to hyperspace to selected before you get pewey - no mass lock for high wake.
More than anything, don't get greedy - at least two of my rebuy count has been from "just one more".
Enjoy! :)

Is your desktop in another room? If not you should be able to cover both areas at the same time. In SteamVR you can subscribe to a lighthouse skin from the workshop that shows the lighthouses laser coverage which will help you confirm if your desktop is covered but not in your guardian boundary http://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=711411281&searchtext=

It's in another room. But I think I can get it to work by just pulling up a seat. I'm not sure about how to connect the hotas yet (don't think the headsets usb will do it but I can also get a long usb extension lead for it).

I love VR and use it as my go-2 for gaming. I have plenty of VR titles but I mostly play Elite... it feels made for VR and very complete

That said, combat... What skill ranking was the NPC you fought? Also, how did you approach the combat, did you just point and shoot or try and strafe around your target?

Feel free to add me, as fighting in a wing ups your survivabilty a lot, and you can use your positions to keep the target trying to turn to face someone and decoy tactics etc.

Thanks Commanders for your helpful tips and comments! In a few days I will complete all the upgrades on my Vulture that I couldnt afford when I first purchased it.

Im running E.D. on a Falcon Northwest Tiki with a 1080 which seems to be a great combination. Doing just a few more delivery runs with it as insurance for the insurance ;) Then it will transform into strictly a bounty hunting machine. Playing UPS Spaceman got real boring after a while :)
