Can't target caustic generators with research limpets - my bad or bug?

For some reason, my research limpets will not accept caustic generators as a valid target (at any distance). I can scan them with the xeno scanner (and the composition scanner for good measure), but the limpets will not deploy. I tried them on a cyclops right next to the caustic generator (thinking that the maelstrom might have an effect) and got back a tissue sample as expected. I have by now tried everything i could think of (swapping my 1E research limpets for a multi-limpet controller, changing fire-groups, using combat-mode, doing both scans, ...) and am completely lost. Any advice?

After you have scanned them with the xenoscanner, you can select a docking option for your research limpet as a subsystem. Once you have selected this, you can start the Limpet.

Also note you can only sample the point once, unlike normal sampling where you can hit it multiple times.
