Capital ships like in Star Wars/Star Trek ?

Hi all !

I was thinking about capital ships like we see in Star Wars and Star Trek.
I mean getting your hands on a Stardestroyer like vessel that would be awsome. *drools*

I made this topic just to see what fellow Commanders think of this idea (I hope it gets pinnend).

Save flight Commanders

they're already in-game. I personally haven't seen one, but they drop into conflict zones, and apparently there is one permanently in Earth orbit.

Save flight Commanders

maybe in a cqc like arena, 2 players in 2 capital dreadnoughts

I have seen some and they feel like the EP6 (endor space) and EP3 (Battle over coruscant) its very epic and rare

Two points to make.

- Star Trek doesn't have "capital ships", that I recall - in terms of ships that are ten to 100 times bigger than "normal" ships. Unless you're including Borg cubes.

- While ED does have the capital ships pictured above, players can't own them or fly them. Not that we'd really want to; they don't seem to actually "fly". At least, I've never seen one fire up its normal-space thrusters and move. It's as if they don't actually have any normal-space thrusters. Plus, they're too big to land or dock anywhere, so what exactly would you do with one?

I for one would love to have one as a mobile base of operations - the Farragut can store multiple corvettes inside it. When you want to land at a station or on a planet, undock one of the smaller ships from the capital. I'd love to not have to jump all the way back to founders world every time I wanted to switch between my corvette/cutter/conda.
...Not to mention how it would perform in a hazres or conflict zone... :D

Haven't been into Star trek for a very long time now, and I could be wrong, but as I recall, the Picard's Enterprise was mentioned as being a cruiser class ship, more than one smaller Federation ship has been refered to as being a frigate or destroyer (can't remember which now), and similar sized ships from other races have been refered to with conventional terms such as cruiser etc.

Well you could use it as an foward base of operations like mentioned by racthet5000.
I can see a big advantage for an explorer who just needs to go back to his/her capital ship transmit the newly found planet and colonise it from there.
Pirates can use it in a simillar way only difference is that they can sent out scouting ships and they can signal the mother ship about a juicy prey and they start stalking it.
Hell we can even get trader wings and forming up an armed convoy to get cargo safely to a planet, besides standard fast fighters they can have one capital ship fixing and refueling these fighters.
Bounty Hunters can use these ships to capture targets alive and lock them up in a onboard prision and transmit the capture to the home planet and bring all these prisioners to a home planet. Or a clan/group bounty hunters can work together and share a capital ship where their bounties can be brought to and have a bulliten billboard stating the status of a certain bounty.
I just mentioned a couple of things but imagine the possibilities that we can have if we get these ships.

Wouldn't really want to see players with capital ships but would like to them having more meaningful uses ingame.

Well, anyone wanting to see a Farragut Battle cruiser, head over to "Wise 0855-something". It's near alph centari,
Then head to the CZ in the system, feds vs Hutton Truckers.
Been there a few days and a Farragut shows up every time.
Awesome sight.
Slightly scarey when you're fighting the Feds though!

Save the Hutton Truckers!

God it sends a shiver up my spine each time I see a capital ship jump in. Glorious :D

I sat in amazement for about 5 minutes when I first saw it jump in.
It's one of the things FD have nailed spot on.
Except for the visible heat sink issue while still jumping. Lol

What's not so amazing is when you're already in the fight and you hear 'capital ship detected'. And it jumps in 100m in your face.

Lol still astonished that I escaped to SC in my FDL with no shields and 3% hull after bouncing off the Farragut. Lol
That sessions repair bill was more than I'd earned. Lol

It was an awesome (I rarely use this word) sight to witness a farragut drop into the system, almost on top of me.
The sound, the lightning, the doom cloud, completely amazing.

I'd love to see enormous shipyards actually building these things.

In fact. It would be nice to see shipyards in general.

I mean, where do these stations store all the ships the have for sale? Lol
Would make more sense, if you wanted a new ship, you go to that ships manufacturers shipyard and get one.
And all they sell is they're own brand of ships. And of course the Hull packages.

Would even add some interesting economy to the game, trading in a ship from the same manufacturers would give you a better price for it.

Well, most starships are a kind of captiol ship compared to most of what they seem to run into, especially in TNG (Baring, like you say, borg cubes). The size of Enterprise D compared to the original makes it seem like a capitol ship.

Looking at that, they are no where near the size of an Elite Capitol Ship, however.
