Capital Ships

I know it has all been said before but...

Well, I was extremely interested in this game until I read that it will not be possible to own or command a capital ship (carrier/cruisers).

So in short I will unlikely be supporting ED with my almighty dollar, I'm sorry Frontier, but I just cant abide once again having my demographic be ignored. Believe it or not there are people out there that are wholly disinterested in flying a fighter or a corvette.

But once again, as ever, people that want capital ships are ignored, probably because it would be too much work for the devs to ballance the game or institute a proper UI to actually command with, not just fly like a giant, slow fighter (or space car)

Any way thats my two cents, feel free to remove this, as Im sure I will be flamed to death over this any way.

You have the right to have a preferences. But control a capital ship, surely, will require to manage a crew of several dozen people (NPC). Some spaceships like the Panther clipper that you can fly request to manage 10-12 crew members (in FE2 in all case). And then you imagine the cost of a capital ship ? How many millions of cr ? An how many thousands cr by week for manage the crew et all the rest ? Perhaps in the future updates, you will realize your dreams in ED ?

Welcome scumdog!

Sorry to hear that you are dissapointed in ED, capital ships might come at a later time in ED, but the premise of ED is that it is you and your ship, capital ships don't really fit that premise.

But anyway good luck and may you find that game that fullfills your capital desires :)

In the long run we might eventually see things like this in ED, but I'm guessing that isn't really a priority until we have the ability to walk around the interiors of out ships and interact with it other ways than just flying it. Having friends being crew-members and so forth...

Star Citizen seem to be going for this much earlier (depending on when that gets released of course) so I guess that might more your thing.

Otherwise there is always EVE...compared to ships in both Star Citizen and Elite they are ALL capital ships. ;)

It just goes against the concept of the game which focuses on the player being a sole trader - it's not an empire building game. It would take a huge infrastructure to support the wages of a battleship crew which is not what this game is about (now). And in this universe it's likely that one of the major powers would just squash someone that tries to buy their own capital ship.

It's OK to not like a game. There are many game styles I don't like (though I don't usually bother to go to those boards and post about it). ;)

What a very strange way to introduce yourself to the forum.

At the end of the day, none of us know what Frontier's long term plans are for Elite Dangerous but based on previous Elite games, there are ships such as the Panther Clipper (as mentioned by Patrick_68000) which are significantly sized and will require crews to man them and I believed it has been mentioned that ships will be introduced that supporting docking of other vessels. In the current Alpha (and soon to be Premium Beta) there is the Anaconda, which is certainly of decent size.

Nevertheless, the mode of play with the Elite games has always been: you start with a small ship and an even smaller amount of credits and work your way up. There generally is no buying yourself a big ship from the outset (Kickstarter reward notwithstanding).

Elite as I played it never had massive ships to pilot.

This may be more up your street.
Its more of a captain of a large ship on bridge commanding your fleet.
it also will support the O.R.
In its early stage but that might give you more influence in the shape of the game through forums.

Lucky to be in a new era of SPACE games. So look around, kickstarter etc. you might find what you are looking for.

But Elite will still be here if you get stuck. Good hunting

You won't get flamed, but you will get lightly toasted and that's your own fault for using phrases like "I just cant abide once again having my demographic be ignored". You weren't ignored - that implies you gave, or they asked for, your view, and I don't believe they did. However, you've now given it, albeit in a little bit of an emotional rant (for a first post) so maybe they'll think about it in future. Personally I hope they don't go there but we're all different.

Welcome to the forum. :)

The game will evolve as time progresses so who knows what FD have in store for the future.

The forum is a very friendly place and well constructed questions will be met with help and advise. (Obviously I omit OSS from that...;))

Have fun on the forum.

Ones we get the expansion walking around stations and ship interiors we will most likely see big ships we can fly, atm we have the anaconda it is not a capital ship but it's still big.

As a completely uninformed and purely speculative guess, I reckon if we do get capital ships it'll be in an expansion of its own. Like walking around, capital ships will need their own gameplay to make them worthwhile.

I think the main problem would that it would risk unbalancing the game. Giving a player a capital ship would make them immensely powerful. Besides, I've always thought of Elite as a Han Solo simulator, rather than a Darth Vader simulator. It's all about freelance pilots living on the edge, rather than uniforms and fleet actions.

I consider Elite to be a future version of life for people like you and I.

If I wanted to, I could go load up my car with some goods and trade it. I could buy a van/lorry/truck (provided I have the licence) and do similar.

Even if I had the money, I could not go out and buy an aircraft carrier/battleship. The military/government wouldn't allow it.

The analogy falls down in many areas (weaponisation being one), but it is how I view it. Capital ships are military vehicles, although in Elite we could do contracts for the military - we never enlisted and had to follow orders.

The idea of a sole trader getting a capital ship doesn't fit well.

I like the comment above - we are more like Han Solo than the empire.

its exactly why I like the game so much.
giving players capital ships will lead to war monger behaviour.
and very big society ships are not going to be possible in the p2p system anyway.
no player will be able to be emperor or something like it.
we are all just citizen or outlaw.
no king of the hill , just the way I like it.

In that case this game should catch your interest: http://www.rockpapershotgun.com/2014/05/21/flagship-trailer/

That is fair enough. your money, your choices.
The reasons why this wont happen have been made clear. Hopefully there are other games out there which WILL have the features you desire.

good luck :)
