Proposal Discussion Capping the game, and seeing the matrix

I remember playing a version of the original Elite on my PC.
Through save games,
and learning the tactic of selling my laser and putting on the rear of my ship.
(Actually I sold everything, and did a few trading runs to buy a better laser to put on the rear of my ship)
I started to branch out.

Eventually I got military lasers on all sides.
stocked with misiles.
Extra power thingy for the shields.
ECM
the cloak
etc etc.

I couldn't upgrade the cobra more basically.
And I landed in a rough area once with a need to do a fuel run past a sun.
I think I played for a hour just to get back to the station.

When I landed I gained elite status.

I ventured through the galaxies, and found THE perfect trade run between three systems close to each other.
and saw every variation of starname that were random letters.
the pictures of the people and aliens that alterer.

I saw the procedural generation for what it was.

It was like the scene in the matrix when Neo see's the matrix for what it is.
I had a giant universe that let me just do the same five things regardless of where I was. Only the names and colours changed, not the game.
.................

Back to more modern times.
There are meta games like collecting money etc, (and Yahtzee from zero punctation makes this point with assassins creed2)

When he was rich beyond his wildest dreams, but that wealth brought him nothing.
He couldn't change the politics in the game, it was still the same amount of quests and cutscenes even if he had no wealth. He couldn't alter the difficulty of alter the core game in any way.
Money meant nothing.

And that was the same thing.

With elite, you ground your way "towards" the next purchase.

Having money and having bought everything - made the game pointless.
Even after seeing the sights.

It sort of turns into an existential crisis for the game - what is the point of this toy.

And I've seen people go through it with other sand box games, like GTA and minecraft, when the illusion of the world breaks down into clipping boxes, textures, and trigger points.

So to bring this meandering to a close.

How will Elite maintain it's audiences, when they become, too rich.
Upgrading your ship isn't going to keep the wealthy playing.

Can we start spreading the wealth, buy larger ships like a capital ship
enter conglomerates, own a part of a station and micro manage them.

Invest in Research and development on a certain planet to get unique upgrades?

Can we pay for a fleet of NPC ships to go somewhere and cause a ruccus to drive market prices crazy.

what kinds of things would YOU like to do if you had infinite wealth in Elite?

I'm not sure what the point is you're trying to make?
The beta right now is very limited with only 55 stars and a couple of ships. Of course people will have seen the content here pretty fast because it's only a snippet of te finished game.

What makes you think that you cannot upgrade your ship to the fullest and travel off into the most distant corners of the galaxy in ED once its finished?

it depends very much on the players own career in the game, a fair few will go the Lakon 9 route and get rich beyond the dreams of avarice but others will take a different route.

my plan once the game comes out is this

Sidewinder-->Hauler-->Cobra-->Armaments--> combat/bounty hunting.

i may step up to a largest ship for a bit just to get a nice fat bankroll together but i'll be stepping back to a general purpose vessel once i have the money.

when i've gained a little rank i may decide to concentrate on missions for a bit, or do some exploring to see more of the galaxy but for me trading is just a means to an end, not the end in itself.

i'm fairly sure others will do the same, even those who start out firmly committed to being traders, once you've been interdicted a few times by pirates you get quite an urge to be able to fight back :)

For me personally also the Iron Man mode may help in the long run. Especially if a personal and/or global ranking is implemented similar to nethack (including name, "wealth", location and cause of death). So every died Iron-CMDR gets his memorial.

"CMDR Letstryagain, dangerous, 2912823121 Cr., Azekbana [-1210,2320] City of Diamonds, died in his Stealth Panther Clipper during fighting an Thargoid Battlecruiser"
"CMDR Bonecrusher666FU, mostly harmless, 102 Cr., Sol [0,0], died in his Sidewinder after attack from police due to illegal jettison of biowaste"

OP, once I have infinite money, I'll be chasing the Elite status and missions, looking for thargoids, assasinating the President of Sol, hiding from/vapourising bounty-hunters, chasing clues across 400 light years to find an exclusive contact who'll sell me an awesome laser, whatever I find fun.

I don't have to make an indelible mark in the geo-politics of the game to have fun, and it has no real boundries.

That said, en masse we will be able to affect the evolution of warzones, famines and other events.
I get to do my tiny little bit, just like everyone else.

...my plan once the game comes out is this

Sidewinder-->Hauler-->Cobra-->Armaments--> combat/bounty hunting...

See you in space, I'm likely to have a bounty...

My path is SW-->Hauler-->Lakon 6-->Viper, armaments & drive upgrades-->Piracy/Assasination/Bounty-Hunting/Military-Mission-Running.

I'll keep the baby cow until I have enough cash to fully outfit the Viper the way I want it and pay the Insurance ten times over, then go and play with it.

Unless another ship comes along that I like better...

I guess, what I'd like to see, as was hinted in one of the first trailers,
was the rescue of the Damocles,
but on a higher order.

take over a space station.

Assassinate
an important scientist keeping an agricultural colony low-tech.
or a militant dictator to put the sector into a democracy (but could end up into an anarchy)

Smuggle secret plans of a planet killing space station for example

getting access to a hidden asteroid ship/hanger with hyperdrive. (you spend most of your time refuelling this thing)

Having larger ships that can extend their hyperdrive field around other vessels, allowing you to kidnap them.
grab a number of those and Kidnap a space station.

Allow NPC's to fly your other vessels that you own, or fellow pilots.

trading quests at a space station?

a dunkerque scenario where a local star is about to go nova and it calls for all local ships to assist in it's evacuation.

Probably I will upgrade my ship to a decent trader as soon as possible, make a fortune then buy one of the passenger-class vessels. Then I will see if it is possible to set up a profitable Ryanair ripoff or go on a deep space exploration in it.

Come the planetary landings module, I will probably see if there are any tourism opportunities to be exploited from that.

Well hopefully now that we have an Elite that isn't "canned" (for a lack of a better word) we'll be able to see expansion and add-ons that keep the content fresh and the players going.

That brings me to the second point the players. Previous versions were single player games... games get boring eventually if you're the only one playing. Last night I helped a new commander get to grips with combat and the ship's controls via chat in one of the warzones. It was refreshing almost as if I was doing something COMPLETELY DIFFERENT.. never had I figured I'd be playing flight instructor in Elite... but I did and that is where the future is with this game.
