Captain's log/Generic RPG Journal

1.The Rambling (feel free to skip this part :D)

Just a quick description of a lurker, like me. I decided to make this thread because i couldn't find anything similar in the forum (i'm sorry if it is a duplicate) and because i think that this would help a lot of people. I don't usually post, hence my forum rank but i do try to read everything, both here and on the reddit page, as well as watch every video of ED. And i own the game long before i made the acc on the forums, so i am not exactly new in ED.

2.The Idea

You know how every RPG has a journal that is updated every time you uncover the in-game lore? Something like the bestiary in "The Witcher 3", you find a monster and your journal updates with lore and information on how to kill it. Well there could be something similar in Elite. For instance, last month i finished the mission from Ram Tah, which was amazing, i love looking for in-game lore and gathered everything. However, all the messages are now scrambled in my log, whereas they could have been updated in a seperate journal that keeps them ordered and displayed like a text: first tab Captain's Log -(next tab)-> Guardians -(next tab)-> Technology and here you have all of the tech messages displayed like a wall of text.

We could even have clues for players -> you find an uknown probe and you get a short description in the Alien Artifacts tab, then, at the bottom, you get a hint: "I wonder if this thing reacts to sound" or something similar. That way you will wet the appetite of the explorer and help him figure everything out, without having to alt-tab and search for the solution in google.

3.My motivation for making this thread and further applications

I was looking for materials in my SRV, which is the best part of the engineers. You got to the engineer, you check the messages and you get information about every planet that offers the ressources you need (Amazing! Just like talking to the inkeeper in an RPG and you don't need to alt-tab or manually search). Then you go to the planet, get in your SRV and use your scanner to find objects, which is also fantastic, because you feel like an explorer (there are ways it could have been made even better, but this is a topic for another thread).
But what are you looking for? You know the material, yet what object will drop it? Furthermore, what do the lines on scanner mean?
You could check inara or wavescanner in google but why should you leave the game, when you could have all of that information in your journal. Maybe you have to destroy one of each object before you get updated information about all of the materials that it drops but you should still get that information.

4.Final thoughts

As a fellow programmer, i would say that this will not take much time (but has to be updated everytime, when introducing new enemies, missions and materials) and therefore should not slow down the upcoming overhaul of more important features. We already have the engineer's tab, which has a similar role.

I would love to hear your opinions on the subject and maybe different ideas that will help fix all those things that i mentioned.

I think a sort of ingame logbook is an useful addition, but for my part not because of RPG but, as a notebook, for personal /important ingame informations, encounters, meetings, take note of intresting locations, to record and store found diaries such as what we can find in the generation ships tourist beacons and like.

In short it can be nice if we can take a note of all sort of things what otherwise forgotten but can prove useful or interesting.
Hey! It's a big galaxy out of there, how you can possibly remember and find everything at your own with just your brain? :)

FD have chosen another path. Provided the journal so 3rd party Devs could write tools to assist. Like the one mentioned below in this post. This way they get operational gearing.

But I agree a simple in game note taker which you can assign to a system or base would also be useful.

A shame really. But they are lucky that ED's community is so amazing, so many websites, tools, radios.

I put forward a similar idea (perhaps a slightly different flavor):

https://forums.frontier.co.uk/showthread.php/365866-Concept-CMDR-Logbook-Hub-(Your-PDA-to-the-Stars!)

Its an area I think is lacking in the game too.

Damn, how did miss that... Yup, definitely what i envisioned +rep from me!

It can be also useful if we can add a short commentary or note to star and galaxy map bookmarks.

You can name your bookmarks as far as i know. Selecting the bookmark tab on the galaxy map and then clicking on the desired bookmark and selecting edit.

This is what was originally discussed in the Design Decision Forum (now Archive):

"Captain's journal: Stardate uhhh...." Player-Logs-in-Elite-Dangerous

Ah, i see. 2013 is too early :D, i came to Elite in 2015. Thank you for the link!

Sometimes that's not enough.

A few 100 character might be useful i don't think about too much just to add some in detailed commentary as a memo what's in there and things like this. Think about the terms of a tweet, because you definitely don't need a small larger novel.

A memo.
