Career Advancements?

A random thought while waiting....

So, we are all CMDRs... So there is no other rank? Like Captain? Admiral? General?

An alter ego of mine is General Public ....

Puzzled..

well you can gain ranks in both federation and empire navies, doing so gives you permits and access to other wise unavailable ships. You are allowed do rank in both. We can also gain ranks from the pilots federation in combat, trade and exploration (there is cqc too but if its anything like pc no-one will bother with it.) On top of all this is you like Power Play this goes from rank 1 to 5 and again gives benefits like power unique weapons/shields and cash.

There is also reputation with factions, if you stick about a minor faction as they become to like you more you will be given better mission rewards.

Ironically, a commander in charge of a vessel is called the Captain by his\her crew. It's not his rank, it's his position.

Commander isn't a rank because you aren't in the military unless you join a navy. You're a privateer of a private vessel, so the title of "commander" just means it's your ship and you're in command of it. But it's not a formal rank.

Cruise ships don't belong to a Navy, Cargo ships don't belong to a Navy. The 1st officer of any vessel is always called or referred to as the Captain, regardless of their actual position aboard ship. His second in command is always called Commander again regardless of their actual position. Should the captain of a vessel be away, his #2 assumes the captaincy and until the actual captain returns is referred to as Captain. A skipper is the first officer on small vessel like pt boat, yachts etc. A skipper delegates to his first mate. Whom in the skippers absense becomes skipper, until replaced, promoted or the return of the actual skipper.

We need to time travel back to 1984 and tell Braben, or we'll be stuck with CMDR forever. Oh wait - there is no time travel :(

Edit: as others have said there are empire and federal ranks, though the main progression is from harmless to elite (three ways)
