Career Question

Hi All,

Apologising in advance for my rather forward questions.

I would have asked this is the ask the Devs post below but it seems to have taken a slightly side tracked journey into the old "when is elite 4 coming out" thread.

Question 1
What are the backgrounds to most of the people here in the forum and at frontier, do you all come from game dev discipline ?

I ask as I'm currently evaluating my options and considering taking the plunge to change careers ( age 30 ), from eLearning development/management and moving into my true passion, gaming !

Question 2
Do games developers run open days, workshops or meet the staff events ? So that people like myself can get a glimpse of what it takes to do a particular role or to speak with other like minded individuals.

I understand that this (forum) is pretty much what i'm asking for, and no doubt this can spark of future discussion.

Question 3
I am multi-skilled, good in a number of things but not exactly an expert in any one (unless you consider making farty noises with your hands a skill), do you find well rounded (and I'm not saying fat here!) individuals of benefit or would you expect them to fit into a specific discipline ? The question may seem a little vague, but the underlying question is I have Music, Programming, development management, infrastructure & development management and instructional design experience. Would I be better suited to going back to my core skills and concentrating on programming as a way into the career ?

I welcome any and all feedback,

Regards

Mike

Question 1

We have all sorts here, some of us (including me) moved from other industries into making games, others have only worked in the industry.

We do have events with educational establishments were people finsishing courses can chat to the relevant people about coming to work at Frontier.

The question is really what do you want to do? As a company we hire to fill specific roles, but having experience and skills beyond that is an advantage.

As Michael says, you really need to find out exactly what it is you're interested in doing within game development before we can provide any more advice :).

From a design perspective; any kind of design experience outside of the industry will always be beneficial. Experience using level editors and actual levels you've made which can be played and show any kind of understanding in what makes a game fun, would be great too :).

All of the information and time taken to respond are greatly appreciated.

While I have a great deal of design and experience outside of the industry, I agree that my experience in "modding" is rather limited to my earlier days messing around with Doom 2 and Quake level editors.

I think i'm now, rather embarrassingly realising that this is not something to be entered into lightly and no matter the experience in other industries is going to amount to much within this area.

I think I may need to go back to the beginning on this and figure out what I want to achieve and start the process of getting there.

Many thanks for the advice. It is much appreciated.
