This has been raised a loooooong time ago.
And many many times.
Any normal software would simply have a single scrolling info text box that puts 99% of all minor, medium, important, and critical messages with the ability to scroll through them to see the last several minutes of history. Certain critical messages might also be displayed elsewhere, like overheating temp turning red. But instead we get "No Targets Available" for limpets and can never see what we just picked up. And messages that pop up right in the center of the screen during combat.
Edit:
It seems there are certain aspects of the UI that have been intentionally designed to handicap the cmdr. For whatever perceived reason. Gameplay, balance, bot prevention, whatever. Ya, some have 'reasons' but regardless it handicaps. Or at very least inconveniences.
- Firegroups, fire buttons, and mode selection.
- Navigation menu - clunky. Not designed for quick, smooth selection. Especially when traveling through busy congested areas of a system.
- Flight assists (supercruise, autodock, autoland) inability to keybind on/off. When ship is crushing itself into the ground can't just turn it off - must accel fwd to gain ship control(?).
- Messages getting plopped over the screen obscuring other messages or overall visibility also seems quite intentional.
