Cargo Capacity

Apologies if this one's already been asked 100 times, but does anyone know the cargo capacities of the Sidewinder and Cobra in ED? :S

With precious stuff trading at over 5000 credits, it won't take long if a cobra is only just over 40k.

Wow! Come gamma, it's gonna take me ages to save for a Cobra, trading 4 canisters each trip.

You'll just have to do some fighting and take out a few bad guys then. :D

That 40k is only for the basic ship without equipment so you'll probably need something like 60-70k to fully equip the ship for trading and combat.

If I have to trade them with this pair they can keep 'em!

I would think, at least i hope, that that just over 40k figure is only a placeholder figure while it's in alpha and not reflective of what a Cobra MkIII will cost in the real game.

It was 150k in Elite 2, i think, and i would say there's a good case to make them massively more expensive than this.

We're no longer in a single player universe, and you don't want everyone getting into top-end ships and equipment within a few days of the actual game going live.

I personally think 4 canisters is a little too small, and they should have taken the opportunity to have every ship carry a lot more. Sidewinder 40 tonnes, Cobra MkIII 150 tonnes, etc. But if that's the way it's going to be, that's fine. Maybe a spot of bounty hunting, with the cargo space just for scooping up whatever your kills drop, at least until you get a bigger ship...

There's no cargo expansion mod (that I've seen yet anyway), so 36 looks like the max. for Alpha 3.

With certain load-outs, a fully tricked out Cobra can set you back in excess of 130,000 cr (including the base model Cobra of course:)).

I doubt anything is set in stone at this point.
Expect changes, lots and lots of changes. In fact that's probably the one thing to expect to not change.. Ongoing changes :D

Keep in mind, when you start playing "for real", you have the option of having the Cobra Mk3 as your starter ship, if you backed to a high enough level.

I deliberately didn't pledge to that level to force me to start from basics. I suppose I was comparing the original Elite in terms of how much profit I might make on the trade runs.

I was hoping to keep a low profile until I could defend myself in a Cobra. Oh well.

Keep in mind, the Sidewinder isn't incapable of defending itself... It is a very capable fighter with a decent weapons loadout (chosen for your playstyle and abilities). And your only source of credits won't just be from trading, so it might not take as long as you might think. :D

Also, while playing the Sidewinder, you'll get good practice and if you lose in a fight, you'll be out less credits than with a Cobra... Better to practice with a cheap fighter than lose everything you make in an expensive one. :)

Yes, the Cobras in the Alpha all look nice, but by the price I could tell they were getting them from a used spacecraft lot.

I totally agree!
I want new ships and equipment to be reasonably expensive. I want to feel the need to earn and save money. It should in general not be possible to buy a new Cobra with a few cargo runs. That would ruin the game.
There should be a constant need to earn money, for maintenance and repairs, upgrades, ammo, buying new ships etc. etc.

I loved Frontier, but the most terrible moment in Frontier was when I flew around in my Panther Clipper 'flying fortress', was virtually impervious to anything my enemies could do, and I did not know what to do with my money anymore. That was the moment the game died and the only thing I could do was starting a new game.

The cobra is one of 3 starter ships that are available to Kickstarter backers at various pledge levels. Therefore I wouldn't be surprised if they were relatively inexpensive compared with bigger or more advanced ships :).

Having said that, it could well be a placeholder for alpha to make the cobra somewhat attainiable. Similarly, I don't expect to be able to sell back equipment at 100% retail price, nor be able to insure a ship for a 5% premium!

At the moment, a cobra costs about as much as a top of the range sidewinder (from parts available so far). It might be good to have the next stage up (asp?) cost about the same as a really tricked out cobra... cobras can hold much bigger and more expensive equipment that sidewinders at the moment, so that jump would be a lot bigger.
