Newcomer / Intro Cargo in hold while purchasing a ship

Say I just accepted a cargo delivery contract and my hold is full. If I then purchase a different ship and put the old one on storage, what happens to the cargo? Does it get transferred (if so, what happens if my new cargo hold is too small), does it get lost or does it remain in storage? Same question really if I put a filled cargo module in storage.

Not that this is a situation that's very likely, and it's easily avoided as well, but it got me thinking: IF the cargo can remain in storage (whether in a stored ship's cargo hold or in a stored module), could I potentially fly with an empty cargo hold through a dangerous zone, dock at the destination, have my stored ship/modules transferred over for a few credits and then have the cargo come along without risking it myself? I did hear that there was a risk in transfer of something, but even so I thought this might be interesting. You could have a big, lumbering cargo ship filled with expensive stuff in storage, then just go to the destination in a fighter.

- you can't purchase it, if the next ship does not have enough cargo space .... same as with swapping ships. stupid for those ships that come without cargo racks at all (DBS...).

- cargo gets transferred.

Hi CMDR and welcome to ED! To answer your first question, the cargo (assuming the new ship has enough cargo space to fit all of your existing cargo from your old ship) would just transfer to the new one. If the new ship's cargo capacity is too small, you won't be able to purchase the new ship.

As for storing cargo modules, you cannot store it if it already is filled with cargo. As of now, I don't know of any plans from FD to put in cargo storage similar to module storage.

You cannot store ships with cargo.
When you switch or buy ship cargo is transferred to new one, and if cargo hold is too small you will not be able to switch/buy ship at all.

Thanks for the quick replies! A pity though - I would agree that my reasoning at the end would be a kind of exploit but I could imagine storing some goods not in your ship when you anticipate a recurring request mission for them.

This is one of those things that, in my opinion, is well broken in Elite.

You should be able to store cargo for as long as your mission is active. I hate not being able to buy a new ship just because Frontier does not fit ships with the larger cargo racks they CAN carry.

I mean hell being able to store cargo would make for a GREAT addition.

Imagine easily being able to swap between your combat ship for those interdiction runs or bounty runs, and then back to your cargo hauler for the cargo runs. But nope.... can't do that easily when your cargo is full.
