Newcomer / Intro Cargo in space – all Stolen?

Hi I’m new, never played the beta but pre ordered and played about 5 hrs yesterday. Before I ask my question some background; I’ve not made much about 5K but done a few trades and basic currier missions. Took a kill mission but had to abandon it, as I had no idea about how to find/identify the right rats…. Anyway I’ve read forums about that and tips on bounty hunting so I’ll give that ago later…

However my question is that I’m confused about cans of loot floating about. I picked some up but it said stolen, I could not sell it and I have no idea where a black market is, surly i dont fly about with that in my hold on the off chance of a black market!. Ok I get that it need a black market its its stolen but is ALL picked up items marked as stolen? If so that means you cant pick up anything without risking being wanted, is that right?. Are there some things you can pick up? I went to a undiscovered location and found some ‘Rare Art’ but left it – (too frightened), was that stolen or fair game… I’m confused.

PS. Like what i see so far, its been a long time since i've seen a game with such quality and potential

Hi, Yes seems as though all cargo is stolen (unless a friend "abandons" their cargo for you). Try and find a spaceport that is a Platform with a Black Market, as these tend to have little or no security vessels (other space stations will have numerous security vessels patrolling). Once docked, look in the contacts on the main screen and see if Black Market is listed. If so, you will be able to sell all stolen goods in relative peace!

P.S. If you get inderticted by a security vessel - run away very fast. If he scans you, you will be fined

Yes, anything you find floating around is stolen. May seem odd when compared to other games where you could always run around and pick up loot etc and it was finders keepers, but in this game, you're picking up someone else's property. There's no salvage rights in the game, though this may be something which comes later. Currently, your best bet is to sell the goods on the Black Market. Black Markets aren't available at all stations, so you should probably find one first. They're located under the "Contacts" tab instead of the commodities market.

Pro Tip - find one at an Outpost instead of a full-blown station. You don't get scanned when trying to dock at an outpost, and being scanned with stolen goods is a Bad Thing. You can always try to dock at a station, but that's a little bit more advanced because you'd need to do it fast and stealthy with Silent Running activated, to attempt to avoid the police scans.

Edit - wow, ninja'd almost word for word!

Unfortunately, I came across just this issue last night....I had performed my first jump to another station and when I got close to the station a few things popped up on my screen - well, it was like 10 casks of wine floating around. Wine. WINE IN SPACE OMG! :)

So, I did the decent thing - checked if anyone was around (no-one was present) then started scooping up the wine (I only had 2 cargo slots unfortunately) so had to leave 8 casks to the wolves :( Gutted.....

Anyway, very shortly after I scooped up the second cask I was scanned and immediately fined - I decided to leggit to another system dump the wine (major /cries) and then figure out a way to pay my fines......

I mean, how can wine be illegal.... ;)
