Cargo Rewards ought to GO

Question to the community: when do you ever want to take the cargo reward from a mission?

Today's tweak to cargo rewards has drawn attention to the fact that sometimes the cargo reward is terrible. Here's an example I screenshotted an hour ago:

Oh joy, Limpets. It's a shame that this station offers Restock, so I could buy as many Limpets as I want here. Hell, if you gave me Materials I could synthesize limpets even if there wasn't Restock.

However, there are some mission rewards that offer valuable cargo! But wait, it's worse than you think:

This cargo in Option 2 isn't being offered to me at a discount - I'm effectively 'buying' it at Galactic Average. This is bad on two fronts:

1) If I want cargo for trade purposes, I should keep the CR and just buy more Reactive Armour at this station for a lower price.
2) If I just want credits, picking Option 2 and selling the cargo off at this station is less money than Option 1.

In either case, Option 2 sucks.

There's only a couple edge cases there you want the cargo rewards:

a) You need to unlock Marco Qwent and the reward on offer. This is a one-off, and to be frank, nobody likes Marco Qwent for it. In fact, he's one of the most hated engineers because of this unlock. Marco being obnoxious does not justify keeping this system.

b) You want the specific cargo given out to complete a mission (e.g. get Bromellite, use Bromellite to easily complete another mission). This has just been removed to avoid another form of exploit and shouldn't still be happening. In fact, it's another reason not to keep handing out cargo as a payment.

c) You want to boost the influence of the Controlling Faction by trading in their market; so this gives you some freebie to boost influence. However, "Extra Influence" can be another reward that has not been rewarded because "Cargo" has displaced it. If this is a mission from the Controlling Faction then I'd rather pick some INF+++++ reward. If this isn't from the controlling faction I'm trying to boost, I shouldn't be doing this mission!

------

TLDR: Cargo Rewards should be removed entirely. There's no reason to ever pick them, they're displacing something better, and many ships simply can't accept them.

Footnote: this problem has predated 3.0, but it was less immediately obvious as there was no "choice" on rewards. It was, however, quite annoying to be denied a mission because (for example) your warship lacked cargo storage space.

You can just not choose it.

It's better than the old system that forced you to take the cargo rewards....can't turn in this mission until you find 4 tons of room in your ship!

I agree all commodities should be available on the market, but still this is better than before.

Well even then those are commodities you can buy on the market.

Originally the cargo rewards were engineering materials that were like rare goods and you could only get them from specific locations. The cargo rewards made it so you didn't have to travel all the way out there and just carry your reward to the engineers directly.

So by changing the cargo rewards to stuff you can get on the open market.

Ummm... Frontier wat u smokin?

There are delivery missions and donation missions requesting these cargo items I believe. But that is the only possible reason I can think of. Then of course there's modular terminals, which people need to unlock Qwent. But the solution there is to get rid of modular terminals and have Qwent request something different. Onionhead maybe.

I agree if these two fringe cases are also addressed, that cargo rewards are silly.

Cargo is also used for tech Broker unlocks...
I believe that most of the cargo is purchasable with some stuff only from mission rewards.
Agreed that cargo rewards need to go so make all cargo purchasable.

Ummm no, we have a choice now. I often take cargo rewards if they are required to complete a fetch mission. For example, am doing long range cargo missions from the Pleiades to the bubble, currently have 25 million credits worth of cargo onboard (704 tonnes) I also picked up a few missions sourcing a small amount of liquor and beer back to the Pleiades, one of my high paying long haul missions will reward me with enough liquor for the return trip.

The main things I check when hunting for cargo runs - Is the payout above 5 million credits per 180 tonnes, does any of the missions offer cargo rewards that could be used for a fetch mission currently on the mission board.

Semi-seriously, there should also be a "mystery" mission reward option, like this:

Quite often the cargo reward is in high demand at the station or nearby, allowing you to sell it at up to double it's average value. It's a little extra profit for common materials, but getting an extra Cr25k multiplied by 30 Platinum is a nice extra reward for paying attention to what you're doing.

Better than the old system, sure, but it's still bad. The cargo rewards ought to simply be removed (and that one edge case, Modular Terminals for Qwent) can be resolved by making him ask for something else. 200T of Consumer Tech would be very in line with other engineers like Lei Cheung.

Don't choose them?

It's not just "don't pick them" - it's that they're always inferior to the cash payout, so the point I'm trying to make is "Don't offer them".

I don't think you can get Platinum right now. All the cargo rewards I've seen since the most recent hotfix are things offered for sale at the current station, and their value is deducted from the maximum cash payout - if you feel like trading cargo, you should still take the cash payout and just buy the cargo at a better price in that station.
