Cargo Scooping question

I have scooped cargo before though I prefer to use limpets...

Last night I tried to scoop some *MATERIALS* with my Fed Gunship. I did NOT have any Cargo Racks installed, which I believe may be the issue, but since Materials don't go into CARGO RACKS I thought I would be OK.

Anyway, I targeted the material, lined it up in the scanner and proceeded to scoop. One thing I noticed was the material icon in the scanner NEVER GREW as it usually does. It stayed the same size. Never managed to scoop anything. I HAVE done this before (but not in the FGS).

Wondering if you MUST have a Cargo Rack even to scoop Materials or if the FGS is somehow scoop crippled. The fact that the material never grew in the scanner leads me to believe it is either the former, or just another 2.3.02 bug..

You don't need a cargo rack to sccop materials. Did the distance to material change as you moved towards it?

To be honest, i never tried without a rack but as you said it got nothing to do with the materials you collect. The material space is limited to 1000 maybe you exceeded it? Or if you collected materials from mining maybe the refinery was full?

I hate to state the obvious but sometimes that's the best place to start:

1. Was your cargo hatch active? (Right-hand panel >Modules)
2. Was your cargo hatch deployed?
3. What was the distance between you and the materials you were collecting? (Possible both moving at same speed?)

Where you really close to a planet?
If you're really close to a planet then the materials will be going at quite a speed towards the planet, so you have to scoop them up over 40m/s or you they'll just be moving too fast.

I am leaning toward BUG.. or more probably, being totally inept at scooping in the FGS though I have successfully scooped in other ships.

To answer the questions:

YES the Cargo Hatch was deployed. YES there was plenty of Material Storage. It was in a RES (Haz Res in Cartoq) but far from rocks and planets. I lined up the Material at about 1.3 km centered in the scanner and proceeded at a stately 30 m/sec or so. The distance did indeed decrease and even though it looked like I should have been in constraints, the material just pinged off the hull.

As mentioned, the object never changed size in the scanner (though, of course, as I got closer, it did get bigger to my eye as long as it was visible and not below the ship).

Some ships, particularly the Python, but maybe yours too, have a hardpoint conveniently placed directly in front of the cargo hatch, meaning when you try to scoop anything, it bounces off the hardpoint instead. Lol

Try retracting your hardpoints, and try again.

:)

Hardpoints were retracted. I am power limited so without retracting hardpoints, my Cargo hatch would be disabled :)

Just to close this topic. Tried again and scooping materials was successful. Must have been my technique or some temporary glitch.
