Newcomer / Intro Cargo space on SRV?

If I equip my Cobra Mk III for exploration it's difficult to include any cargo racks, I'd need to do without something I may need. However, I've noted that the SRVs have cargo space - can I use this if I don't have cargo racks equipped?

It is as Winterwalker said.

As you progress in the game you find more and more that great ships when you were less ambitious are now just not quite there in terms of slots another example of this is the Diamondbacks Explorer.

Agreed. The DBX is good explorer but requires major sacrifices with Horizons.

A useful mod I would like to see from the Engineers would be to split a 2 size slot into two single size slots. Or the ability to buy a 2 slot cargo that converts the space into 2 singles.

This. Don't mind if it's expensive, but the ability to fit a small, light ship with both explorers' scanners without wasting two or three slots' worth of space would be a real boon.

Or even a combi-scanner set at a slight weight and hefty cost penalty over the two separate items.
