Carnivores hunt only when hungry?

If you remember when JWE 1 first came out, the carnivores would murder the herbivores indiscriminately if they could access them. Frontier listened to community feedback and made it so the carnivores would only hunt the herbivores if they were hungry. That is, except for the Indominus, which appropriately continued to murder everything indiscriminately.

Watching BestInSlot's gameplay of Chaos Theory mode, it seemed like his Velociraptors murdered the Parasaurolophuses pretty indiscriminately. I didn't see them even feeding from the corpses. He released four Parasaurolophuses and within just a couple of minutes the Velociraptors had killed them all. Did anyone else notice that?

So my question is whether the carnivores will only hunt when hungry or if they are going to murder the herbivores indiscriminately again? I hope it's only when hungry.

They killed them all because of the (not so big?) enclosure completely being their territory maybe. And if the Paras came in later, the Raptors would have perceived it as an intrusion into their territory and react accordingly. Maybe that's why they killed indiscriminately.

To be fair, the raptors were always depicted as being fairly murderous... an attribute they likely received from the novels, which depicted them as extremely murderous...

maybe it has something to do that raptors and indominus rex can now cohabitate and they have now the same kill instinct

True, towards people. In the movies at least, the raptors haven't killed anything besides people, oh and that one poor cow. I'm fine with the Velociraptors going on a murderous rampage when they're released upon your park guests.

I'm just wondering if we try to create a Site B type sandbox park, are the Velociraptors going to run around the entire park slaughtering everything or will they only hunt when hungry? It was fixed in JWE 1 to be more realistic and I'm just hoping it wasn't changed back to the murderous psychopaths option for some reason.

I noticed that too and brought it up on a comment on a Evolution Square video. It didn't seem to just be the raptors. The Rexes required 3 prey items to hunt to be happy. They seemed to immediately hunt down and kill all of the goats. It sure seemed like they'd just kill forever non stop even if they weren't hungry. Did anybody post footage of a Rex or Raptor actually stopping to feed on a corpse?

I didn't see the Velociraptors feeding on any of the Parasaurolophuses that they were slaughtering, although to be fair, BestInSlot didn't keep the camera focused on the Parasaurolophus after it had been killed. But I think he had four Velociraptors in an enclosure and released four Parasaurolophuses and the raptors had killed them all in just a few minutes, so you would think if they were eating from the carcasses and if they were only killing when hungry, it would've taken a lot longer than that.

I watched a video from The Gaming Beaver and confirmed that the same Velociraptor hunted multiple Parasaurolophuses and killed them without feeding from any of them. So at least in the development build, carnivores would hunt herbivores indiscriminately if they can access them.

It would be nice if Jens could clarify if the carnivores will hunt the herbivores only when hungry or if there is some other mechanic at play?

If you think, this kind of behavior exists in some modern animals, which hunt to improve their predator skills, some animals really need to hunt several times, but how this will work when the game comes out I do not know, by the gameplay we saw that the rex needs 3 goats. I would like to see this need for hunting in other species, of course without exaggeration

The only creatures that hunt indiscriminately are carnivorous hybrids as we all know

Predators need to hunt multiple times because most attempts at predation are unsuccessful. There aren't any animals that hunt successfully and then immediately hunt again, and again. Other than humans, of course. So that's what was kind of jarring about seeing the Velociraptors just slaughtering the Parasaurolophuses but not eating any of them. That's why this issue was fixed in the first game, so that the carnivores would behave like animals and not murder machines.

Good points, i agree

The more I think about it, the more I think that this is the answer. Like carnivores will attack any herbivores that enter their territory, even if they're not hungry. Not very realistic in the sense that it's not how real predators behave, but it would make sense why the Velociraptors attacked all of the Parasaurolophuses: because the entire enclosure was their territory. I liked the mechanic from the previous game where they only attacked when hungry and I hope they didn't change it, but I feel like this is probably the answer.

I hope we get some more information about this pre-release. I don't think it would be giving too much away to explain how the predation system works.

If I remember correctly, at least a few Raptors also had the aggressiveness trait to them. i think it was in BestInSlot's video.
That's also a factor to consider. I mean the Raptors are an aggressive species regardless, and then being extra aggressive due to modified genes results in that I guess

Yes I asked BestInSlot on one of his videos if he thought the raptors were hunting even when not hungry and he reminded me that he bred them with the aggressive trait. That might be the answer. In JWE 1 the aggressive trait was purely a stat trait but that would be really cool if it modified behavior this time around.

If that was really the case and that's how it worked that would be awesome!

Just imagine.... "when she came in she killed all but two of the others. When she looks at you, you can tell she's working things out.."

Maybe we could create an og jp raptor that would even kill other raptors if there were more than she liked. Add aggressive gene, add reduced social gene and wallah!

I don't know. But in the first game carnivores would kill everything if they were hungry or not. It's one of the things Frontier fixed in the first game. It would be kind of odd to have this problem return in the sequel after it was basically fixed in the first game.

I am going to say since Frontier said raptors and other small theropods can now climb fences that this won't be an issue on release cause like I said it was a major complain about the first game and they fixed it. To have it be an issue in the sequel would be like two steps forward and one step back with everything else they have in the sequel. Since the sequel seems to be a massive improvement over JWE I would say this won't be an issue. But we won't know till release.

Yeah I agree, that’s why I was wondering if it was an issue with the new territory system. But I’m betting it had something to do with the aggressive gene BestInSlot gave to the raptors. Like carnivores bred to be aggressive will attack anything in their territory? That would make sense.

You've obviously never seen a fox in a chicken pen.
Foxes, cats, chimps (I think) all kill for fun, not just for food.
