Carriers and different playstyles: Why Sqdn Megaships aren't necessarily pew-pew

Okay, already we're seeing the 'this is more pew-pew content' complaints starting to gain cohesion, based purely on the group system getting the name 'squadrons' and the megaship ownership 'carriers'

But (rampant speculation time) what if each Sqdn could own ONE megaship type, and they each had different attributes or abilities that might reflect that groups playstyle?

Did someone say "rampant speculation time"... I would personally never accuse the OP of such a wanton offense.
 
Allow them to actually hook their roots into the game and its narrative, and it will be compulsory to be in a decent-standing group to make headway in those areas. Hence "oh noes, not the eve-bomb"

I think in EvE they have a special term for it...

THE BLOB!
 
I haven't had a good chance to read up on what fleet carriers will be able to do (if there is even any info available), but it sounds like FD said "squadrons will be able to own 'fleet carriers'," NOT "…own stations" or "own megaships." Which may mean that they're comparable in size to a capship or smaller and good for two things: a) moving you and your buddies' ships around as a group and b) 3R (refuel, repair, restock). All while being a significant gold sink (Hydrogen fuel cargo becomes useful to buy, anyone?).

Don't get me wrong, this would still be quite powerful, but not necessarily game-breaking without other services that stations offer.
 
For pewpew ;)

Without being able to dock at stations in a system there is nothing much you can do to affect the BGS beside pewpew.
If you need to rearm in the system you have done pewpew.
If you need to repair in the system you are a bad and lazy pilot or you have done pewpew.

Mobile infrastructure to facilitate pewpew.

Yes, there could be a lot of interesting and non-pewpew activities for a carrier. It really depends on how FD implements the carrier (and squadrons). It could result in a really nice addition for everybody or it could be nothing more than pewpew.
Sadly I don't have a lot of faith when it comes to FD and pewpew.

What about outfitting then?
Is using outfitting a pew pew only activity?

If the only station with outfitting is at the wrong binary 100,000 light seconds away, might be nice drop mobile infrastructure in at the other star

Exception that mining cruiser should have large cargo space and Battleship should have limited or no cargo space.
Why did add all the best feature to Battleship...

I think for gameplay wise Squadron Cruiser should be destructible. It'll create some interesting war between Cmders Squadron's and increase PvP for the one who like it.
The one exploring that doesn't want their Cruiser Exploring ship to be destroyed can play in private group.

If Cruiser can be destroyed then there is good game play because it could lead to interesting mission to go destroy a Mob/Pirates cruiser station for example.

It should be different from station : Destructible and not too powerfull. It could for example serve as a protection to miners (Cruiser has turrets).

NPC will really needs a rebalance and increase in strength with all the Multi-Crew, Cruiser, SLF, Wings we have...

The middle two are currently what the Gnosis does, but everyone can dock at it (as no sqdn mechanic to determine where your allegiances lay is currently available) I do have to ask though (as a lone player who doesn't really do groups anymore) why would you or I need/want a carrier?

so you can take every one of your ships with you.... i know im going to try my damdest to get my carrier because going to founders world to switch ships everytime i want to do something diffrent is very annoying (cutter trade/ vet pew pew/ assorted smaller craft for scouting/racing/communiy goal/ hunt search for unkown things)

That would be because it's a new feature and people are speculating.
IIRC, Squadron will only appear at the end of next year so worrying about it now is an exercise in futility.

Well, I will take FD for face value what they said. And they said:
1) Squadron will be able to acquire mega ship (in what way credits or real money not known yet in detail) which will be just a minimal refuelling/repair station;
2) They will have separate channel for communication;

That's basically it. FD really does not have to do anything else. It can add some things later on if required but most of basic stuff for squadron aren't pew pew related at all. It is up to commanders to decide what they will do;
 
If FD were to hand the megaship jumping over to players as part of fleet deployment tactics, I expect it won't be long before a player group decides to permanently take their megaship to Beagle Point.

Additionally, could you imagine several sub-squadrons of Fuel Rats deploying multiple fleet carriers to key points across the galaxy? That would be pretty cool.

Very useful for explorers in that case.
 
Holy crap, I hadn't even consider it being a Battlestar. Please Fdev the lawsuit would be worth it. I want a Battlestar so bad and I promise not to name it Galactica or Pegasus. My fingers are so behind my back.
 
I wonder how the big ship will work in term of being able to move it around, otherwise it could be interesting to just park it where you're mining and let it act as a giant defensive hub where you can retreat too quickly if under attack.

Or maybe something for the fuel rats where they can store large quantities of fuel in the large ship and use that as an extra hauling point outside the bubble to help people with.
