Carriers for exploration

Looks like the fleet carriers they actually will be usable for exploration. 500 ly jump range (the Gnosis has 551), fueled with some new resource and doesn't have to wait until the weekly server restart to jump. Customizable loadout includes an option for exploration services, whatever they'll be. Available to solo Commanders, for "a large amount of credits".

So, where will you be flying yours? I imagine there will be a race to the bottom and the top of the galaxy.

I'm really curious about what the exploration configuration will do, whether that provides UC services or something else. While I suspect there will be a race to get to some previously unreachable locations, I'm considering the possibility of using mine to explore something far away from civilization and yet still have a quick turnaround on selling data and establishing tags. And new screenshot possibilities if it becomes possible to park them over rings, or something, depending on how they design its capabilities.

Yep, that does sound better. Also, excellent point on the screenshot potential: looking at the ships, there should be lots.
Although I wouldn't be surprised if we couldn't actually control the carriers the way we do our ships, and could just command them to jump somewhere. Might only be around the arrival star then. Still, even selecting a body for it to orbit could be good.

I suspect you can't jump to a system not previously explored.

It'll be nice to be able to bring a fleet of different ships out into deep space. On the other hand, it might ruin the feeling of isolation and survival that makes current day exploration a unique experience.

The biggest thing I'm wresting with is that the large ships already feel "too big" for a single CMDR to handle without a proper crew, and now I'm also in charge of a giant spaceship carrier? I guess I really am a King / Admiral, but I hope NPC crews are soon to follow, otherwise it just won't feel right IMO.

I like the look of this. The devil (as always) is in the details. Let's hope it's not too much of a grind to refuel them. I kind of doubt that there will be a UC on these. That would make things a bit too easy.

Hm, looking at the trailer again, those are separate support vessels, not new modules or anything on the carrier itself. That's a bit odd though, since it says "customize your fleet carrier to provide services and modules suited to the task at hand." (Emphasis mine.)
In any case, I wouldn't be surprised if refueling costs went up the more support vessels you had.

@ Old Duck: Not only are we Kings and/or Admirals, but pretty much every Commander is also filthy rich. According to the EDRPG book, one Cr equals around 50 USD.

Would love an NPC crew to order around.

My CMDR doesn't plan on getting one until he intends to retire, at which point he will jump his to an otherwise unreachable system that has no way to refuel the carrier for a jump back. If anyone follows him, they will also be stuck, so it should be a good deterrent (and if not, he will terminate them, repeatedly, with extreme prejudice). He will then live out the remainder of his days free from the petty concerns of humanity, thargoids, guardians, or whoever else is out there.

I wonder if we get ability to store several ships per player there. For I haven't heared anything official about it.

And if refueling would require some specific ship design (let's say a miner, or a hauler, or a fuel tanker) and at the same time that specific ship would be the only one to take on a long expedition, that would actually be not at all convenient.

If this is implemented right will create a new interesting gameplay that can open possibilities in the exploration area, but i dont expect that will be the jump and move around thing, will be more of jump to an area and use the ships in it to explore, and that makes more sense, and limited time frame between jumps, if u cant jump to unexplored areas will make alot of sense, or else that would be bad for explorers.

500LY will bring a load more systems into range. However, it’ll be interesting to see what the fuelling requirement is, and whether it is available in all systems.
