Carriers, piracy, and you

I posted this on another thread and was asked to make it a separate thread so as to not derail their discussion.

As an explorer one of the things I haven't seen is any kind of piracy reporting. While I know it isn't very lucrative it would seem like a natural choice for those players who enjoy tagging along on expeditions and then come out of the shadows. Also I'm wondering how all that would play into pirate carrier operations, such as parking at stars a jump or two from known mining and or POI spots. Prior to the age of carriers most explorers flew undefended egg shells while some, like myself, have always equipped some protection at the sacrifice of jump distance. Just curious how the pirate community is responding to this new game mechanic, and how are carrier operators doing so also. Thanks in advance for any insights you can offer.

It's rather simple : Exploration typically shares zero common grounds with Piracy.

Carriers did not change anything about this.
There's virtually nothing a Pirate could gain from interdicting or chasing an Explorer.

Heavy duty Mining Operations only occur at Player hotspots , but those are Miners and not Explorers.
I guess a Pirate Carrier would have to be amongst the hundred other Carriers near New Borann to get some very nice loot.

I think that for carriers that have an open to all policy, Private Groups and Solo will become the normal mode to approach in. Deep space would cease to be a (relatively) safe haven in Open, at least around carriers.

Squad/Friend/S&F only carriers will presumably be safer, as "pirates" (they can't steal data, so what are they pirating? I think the G-word would apply here) can only dock if invited. This may mean that carrier-explorers will have to curate their friends list to exclude would be attackers.

Being a pirate, and owning a FC, in deep space offering services as a honey trap will only work a few times before word got out and cmdrs switched to a safer mode.

What would have made an interesting difference here would be if FC owners could limit to Open-only or only to PGs they were a part of.

Well, you can't pirate anything worthwhile from explorers, so that's that.

If we're talking about griefers, then it's also not worth it for them. Take a look at the traffic data, for both carriers (from EDDN) and inhabited systems: you'll find that the latter have far more players coming and going. Hanging around for hours around a fleet carrier just hoping that a player would jump into the system would be extremely boring.

Personally, I don't doubt that sooner or later, we will see some reports of kills done out in the galaxy. As long as things remain the way they are though, these will be a few isolated incidents. Maybe somebody will say (again) that they claim Sagittarius A* or whatever, and will shoot down all approaching ships. But with convenient respawn points nearby, that will hardly matter.

FCs out in the black may change exploration as we are used to.

You can reequip your explo vessel with mining gear to change your game play for some days and mine some Tritium for the FC before you move on with your exploration trip.
And this could bring pirates to the scene...

I've heared rumors that e. g. the DSSA Kraut is buying Tritium and LTDs on different kind of markets ;)
