General / Off-Topic [Cars] Manual Vs Automatic

Well car hunting went well.

I found the following online;
2006 WV Polo 1.6 automatic, with super low miles for £2500
2007 Citreon C3 1.6 semi auto, with super low miles, for £2500
2008 Kia Cee'd 1.6 auto, with below average miles, for £2500
And the Mini 1.6 automatic, I'd already seen, with 112,000miles, for £3500...

The garage selling the WV was closed, despite saying it was open Monday to Saturday. Nice. Looked around the outside, mostly good, had a few door scrapes though.
The Citreon C3 was sooooooo ugly, and it had the 2nd worse gearbox I'd ever used, it was sooooooooo slow to change gear, I kinda felt sea sick...
The garage selling the Cee'd was also closed, despite saying it was open Monday to Saturday, but it looked very clean.
And the Mini, I was supposed to look at again because it was pouring down last time, well by the time we'd faffed about it was dark... and raining. Again. Lol
And I think £3500 is overpriced, and out of my price range too.

There's a Suzuki Swift for sale we're going to look at on Friday, if it's not sold...

You can get a road legal MX5 turbo trackday car for £2.5k. That would be much more fun than any of those :) 1100kg, 200 BHP, what's not to like?

Changing the oil every 12 minutes? :p

Let your GF change the oil. It shows you're a progressive thinker not constrained by traditional gender role bias and it shows you trust her with important tasks. You can buy her a present of some mechanics gloves and you know how much women like new clothes. Win win win :)

Research the recommended service intervals/histories for the respective vehicles.

A higher mileage car that has been well taken care of and has recently replaced parts can be a much better deal than a lower mileage car that is due for a new water pump, timing assembly etc etc etc...

Eg, around 70k is often a bad point to buy a car, but it depends on the make model obviously.

When I was younger and drove Rx7's they were manual, I would have been embarrassed to be seen with a automatic. Now that I'm older and my car is just something that gets me places I prefer the auto.

I got it all out of my system in my 20s. If I had money and could afford a hot lunch sports car it would definatly be manual.

2500 fer a 12 year old vw? Wow...if someone offered me a 12 year old car fer 2500 I think Id just laugh in their face and wait fer the punchline. Not being funny btw, Im absolutely serious. 3500 fer a minbin with over 100k miles and a 1.6 basic engine? Im in the wrong business if people seriously pay that sorta money...cos nobody I know would even consider paying that unless it was only about 5 or 6 years old and came with lots of extras and warranty.

Im really not being funny about that...maybe its cos of where ye live I dont know but those are mental prices fer what is currently a buyers market in the UK. Fer that money, ye should be aiming a helluva lot higher than what yer looking at. Looking at a 12 year old car, first thing Id do is run a magnet along the underside to see where the holes are patched up with isopon bewfore starting the engine to listen fer wear and tear to the pistons...worn engines have a very distinct sound which cannot be hidden so long as ye know what yer looking for.

In my own experience, theres only two sorts of people who sell cars like that fer the price ye list...greedy dealers with big windows to see ye coming a mile away and old folks who are selling their pride and joy thinking its worth more than it actually is.

Thats taking into consideration that in Ireland, we can buy cars cheaper in the south and re register them in the north so its even cheaper again. Fer that money, Id be wanting something a lot younger and certainly not a Kia of all things...decent motors but they dont hold their money over time. Same goes fer citroen and the 12 year old vw...just lol ^

At 69+ years, I remember a time where as there was no such thing as an automatic transmission. Now a days in America, one will be hard pressed to find anything younger than 10 years with a manual transmission. Even over the road tractor trailer's are offering auto transmission and at some point completly replace manuals.

Five years ago, I sold one of my three bussiness and retired to Mazatlan Mexico. And though one can buy a auto with an auto transmission, just like in the days where they became available in America, they have to be special ordered. None of the car dealer's in Mazatlan have anything but manuals on their lots. And if so, they are used and have a significant higher price. But just like in America in the days of old, there are transmission mechanics everywhere in addition just like the old days, one can also generally repair them themselves.

Thus a luxury feature has now become a standard feature in America. With few exception, almost know one but us old guys can drive an auto with a manual transmission anymore, in America.

I had to learn how to shift all over agian when moving here. Though it was like riding a bycicle, one never really forgets how, it's just a it ackward until the mussel memory comes back.

Wow, I would have thought that in the States manual cars truly belong to prehistoric times, with cars from 50's onwards mostly fitted with an automatic.
I think elsewhere the advent of automatic is the symptom of the sheer magnitude of the traffic, there are too many cars on the road. Even in the very cost concious India, automatic is starting to take off because of that.

Even though I still consider myself a petrolhead, I can't wait our office to move back to the town (in a few weeks) to switch back to public transport and avoid the madness on the roads... and I recon there are far worse places traffic-wise.
Hell, if I could I would move to the countryside, but that's another topic.
