Caskets and tablets and urns, oh my!

About a week ago, jonesing for the Guardian FSD booster (which I now have and it's great), I got my first taste of Guardian treasure hunting. I visited two Structures, one large @ SYNUEFE EN-H D11-96 (sound familiar?) and a small one @ SYNUEFE NL-N C23-4. In the latter system I also visited 3 Guardian Ruins. At these sites I collected numerous artifacts, including (as I recall) a total of 5 Guardian Orbs. They were just sitting around the sites like interstellar soccer balls. I also read quite a few obelisks, as I had an inventory full of nearly every required artifact. I hopped back to the bubble for a Tech Broker, got my GFSDB, sold off the artifacts (after all they were easy to collect and tended to invite interdict attempts) and decided to look into the Guardian thing a bit deeper. That's when I learned about Ram Tah's mission, the Meene mission (or Mean Mission, as you will soon see). Sounded doable. I had a couple of Beacons yet to scan for new sites, plus some notes from various sources, decided to head back into the black and start working toward that 100mil payoff.

In the past two days I've visited three Guardian Structures, one large and new to me, one small and new to me, and the small Structure that I had visited on my first trip out to get the Module Blueprint, and where I had collected a number of Guardian Orbs. During this latest sojourn, I found about a dozen scannable obelisks, over half of which required an Orb to read the data. On the new small site, every single obelisk but one required an Orb. Yet, after thoroughly searching the sites (at least 1.5 tanks of Standard SRV fuel per site), this was my inventory when I logged off:

Notice the problem? A rather annoying and complete lack of Orbs. That means that more than half of the obelisks I found for the mission, I could not scan. Now I understand that spawning the Orbs in any predictable number is too much to ask for, RNG and all that, but zero spawns on three planets, on one of which I relogged and searched again to no avail? That's a total of four instances of Guardian Structures that yielded absolutely no Orbs, items necessary to complete the mission. I have begun to ask, is this some kind of vindictive programming at work? A deliberate, drastic reduction in Orb spawning once the mission is accepted? I'm tempted to abandon the mission to test whether Orb spawns are then greater, but don't know if I can pick it up again. I rather doubt it.

I'm also at a bit of a loss on how to monitor my progress, hampered though it is by the lack of Orbs. Transactions says naught, but where else should I look? I'd also like to know if the obelisk scans I did prior to accepting the Meene (Mean) Mission count toward the total number of scans done? I did accept a 50k payoff for Codex entries prior to getting the mission, but don't know if that is what is sought by Ram Tah. His message is a bit vague on that account. Do I look in the Codex for mission progress? It all seems a little scattered and haphazard at the moment.

May-or-may-not help... but Orbs in particular are known for "rolling away". They are one of the rarer ones though... go find an (Beta) Ancient Ruins Site... they almost always have orbs.

i.e ones that look like this:
132686

Yes, I drove around the Structure sites out to about 300m (depending on terrain) in search of rollers -- I had found a few of those before taking on the mission, mainly at the Structures. I don't recall finding any at the Ruins, though. One of the planets I went to had the single Structure and 3 Ruins, all different types, not sure if that included a Beta type but the pic isn't familiar, so I suppose not. I will be re-visiting those tomorrow, maybe get some Orbish luck then. Thanks for the tip.

The timer is a bit of a joke, I usually have all the pylons nailed in about 3 or four minutes, mainly because after searching for ORBS I have the layout fully memorized. The blueprints are a secondary goal for me in any case, at least after getting the FSD boost module. Mostly I'm running in my Exploraconda and taking moody screenshots of the Guardian sites.

The basic premise of the Guardian messages (Meene/Mean) mission is solid, though scrambling among the Structures and Ruins now leaves few actual discoveries. Like much of ED, it's light years wide and a few inches deep. Still, I'm flying a giant starship around and closing in on indepenent billionaire status, so wothehell Mehitabel, why not?

Things are looking up -- I managed to scrounge exactly one Guardian Orb, at one of the three Ancient Ruins sites on Synuefe NL-N C23-4 B 3. This allowed me to backtrack to places where obelisks requiring Orbs could be scanned. I also learned how the mission proceeds -- every scan of a unique new obelisk code results in a Mission Critical Message from Ram Tah explaining why it's so Critical, and also indexing the data. With 100 total data finds to be made, approx. 20 each in five categories, it will certainly take some time, and some obelisks may (probably) require Thargoid tissue samples to complete, so I may not earn the entire 100 million and 10 mil bonus; I'm not hot on Thargoid hunting. I wonder if it's on the market somewhere?

My total scan count was 21 for tonight, but future sessions should go faster now I have an Orb in inventory.

Finally got a chance to read through that guide, and it's interesting that it uses none of the Guardian Ruins I have visited, it focuses on systems hundreds of LYs distant. No matter, J's Sojourner is up to the task. My total obelisk data scan count is now @ 31, and I've yet to find any beta-type ruins, hopefully the next system will have one or more. I have all the artifacts needed now, found 3 more Orbs at the last of the three sites on Synuefe NL-N C23-4 B 3, a gamma-type ruin. Since the guide did not list this planetoid, do you think it would be helpful to make up maps for other Commanders' reference? I have screenshots & copious notes, plus I've slopped together a makeshift spreadsheet similar to that in the guide to help keep track.

I may have also found a bug -- one of the obelisks did not respond properly to my scan, I got a message from Ram Tah saying I needed different items in the SRV cargo hold, but I double-checked and those I was carrying matched the obelisk graphics. I even tried again after a relog and no go. I'm not sure if there are other criteria for the scan, the guide mentions some that need to be done in Open (I always Solo) and/or with multiple Commanders. Weird.

TBH, ignore any that say "Needs to be done with multiple commanders".

There is a bug where multiple commanders in an instance can (somehow, no idea how) cause different obelisks at a site to light up. It's a bug and it should not happen at all, FD just never fixed it. I remember some guides had ones like that listed as part of their "how-to" guides... those guides really should've been changed to include actual scan locations, as it's still doable to get all scans in solo, with exploitation of that bug being entirely unnecessary.

RE: the potentially bugged one, I do remember one or two being bugged like that, but I just worked around it.

I would love to spend more time in these structures as they give me this feeling of something ominous and grandeur.
However all i have been to seem to be placed on these uninteresting beige moons.
Makes me wonder, are there any non-beige planet guardian ruins?

That feeling of faded grandeur and mystery is what keeps me at the task. TBH , the code-matching mini-game is getting tedious, although Ram Tah's messages about each successful discovery are at least interesting. I just wish they were recorded in the Codex somehow rather than having to leave so many messages in my Comm panel. Then I could have a permanent record and review them with much greater convenience, but player convenience never seems to enter FDev's minds except in trivial matters.

RE: beige ruins -- I don't think that will ever change. All the Structures and Ruins I have found are on rocky planetoids, and at the time the Ram Tah Mission was started, boring beige was the predominant color scheme for rockies. All the more variegated textures came long after the origin of the mission, and they would (I assume) have to re-texture the Guardian sites as well as their host bodies so there would be a smooth transition from planetary surface to Guardian Ruin. I doubt this is a high priority. But I invite being proved wrong!

LATER: Hah! I have proven myself wrong -- the very next Guardian planetoid I have visited is a High Metal Content world, deep reds with a fair amount of variation in color, though not much in the ruins themselves. Synuefe TP-F B44-0 C D 1. There are 3 Ruins sites and one Structure, though the latter seems to have no Data Terminal and is so remote and in such rugged terrain, there is no landing possibility for Sojourner within a fair number of kilometers. Too bad, as there are obelisks (though only those at Ruins seem to count for the mission) and mats sources.

Blimey! That's far more than what i have ever expected from a response. Thank You for the detailed information. I will make sure to visit said spot :)

Progress. 64 codes deciphered now, past the 1/2-way mark, no turning back. I ran into another bugged code, could not read it properly @ 2 sites (it was treated as if already read, but isn't in the list of Ram Tah messages), but did manage to read one that was bugged earlier. I ran out of worlds to go to so did a websearch and found a number of useful info resources, but the best is this interactive Galaxy Map that has filters for various types of POI worlds:
https://map.canonn.tech/gr-data.html

It even sorts the Guardian worlds by type of ruins -- Alpha, Beta, or Gamma -- and that saves a lot of guesswork. It's more useful than text data because I was able to find worlds within a single jump to explore, once I located the planetoid I was on at the moment.

I'm also collecting quite a few interesting images, perhaps enough to make a short movie. Once such:

Decoding

All done. I have to admit I was knackered and getting a little frustrated as the last two obelisk codes eluded me despite visiting site after site -- either I have crap luck or the algorithms that allocated codes to obelisks could have distributed the codes more evenly. For the last code I had to resort to looking up maps in a database and finding a system and planetoid where it was found and confirmed -- not my preference, but I wanted this over with! Incidentally, thanks to the Cmdrs who contributed to those maps, they are very useful! I'm sure I could have shortened my trip digging into them and pre-plotting a course (as the guide above does), but sometimes just flying is more fun. I pulled in 5.5+ million in Carto alone, found three or four more pristine icy rings systems, a few systems that need first mapping (though no first-discovered), and covered about 2300 LY round trip so far, another 600+ tomorrow to bring the bacon home to Ram Tah. Explorer and Trade ranks have moved up satisfactorily. Got a mess of excellent pictures as well! All around a positive experience, but I am glad it's done.

Gettin' the Guardian goodies

Just in case nobody mentioned that: You can hand in the Ram Tah missions incomplete and get payed anyway. You just don't get the completion bonus.

Partial hand-in is what I did back in the day. Managed to get 83 of them before I had enough. That was enough to elevate me from poverty and allow me to afford a Type-9 and start to earn a decent income.
