Hey all,
This week we played through an event based on the Elite: Dangerous' publicly archived designs. You may want to play straight through from chapter one instead of spoiling it by jumping right to the end.
After a day of fighting, the sieges of both Castor and Pollux became too much for the civilian population.
Stuart Town's main rotor was disabled by noon, leaving it with only momentum to maintain artificial gravity. The ongoing assault caused fires throughout the station, spreading ever more easily as the ebbing gravity no longer held them in place. Fire suppression teams gradually lost ground until an evacuation had to be ordered and the station was officially sold to the Empire. The Empire's most loyal commanders were assigned as honour guard for the fleeing citizens.
The situation in Castor was even worse - docking bays became clogged with unspaceworthy ships; food stocks were destroyed as agricultural modules vented atmosphere; and ammunition supplies had to be scuttled as their containers were ripped open and plundered by the enemy. Alliance transport missions were offered for refugees, but independent mercenaries pursued and killed many of them. Surviving members of the board of directors formed the Castor Government in Gateway - a government in exile hoping to reclaim its territory some day.
As hours turned into days, it became clear no faction would be able to gain the upper hand. Although the Empire retained a token presence in Pollux, they were never able to extend their protection beyond Stuart Town and the system gradually slid into anarchy. Elsewhere the Alliance signed a non-aggression pact with the Independents, and without a military presence Castor's derelict space station quickly become a pirate base.
Meanwhile, the dark system of Helen became a key mining resource for the region. Having proven they could force cruisers out of the area, commanders that avoided the war managed to reinstate the system's shaky peace and began mining again. Over time, piracy in the system evolved into protectioneering as well-armed commanders agreed to help targets through the nearby anarchies to the rich trading worlds beyond.
Realising the region would remain a wasteland so long as the great powers were in stalemate, Castor's goverment in exile began generating missions to connect Helen with other nearby worlds. Greandio and Lialiaed were nearby, and astronomers had been reporting anomolies in the region for years. They need only discover a safer dark system for people to jump through, and their homeworld will finally be free of the place that launched a thousand ships.
