Catastrophic FSD failure

A feature whereby there is a risk, every time you use the FSD, of a catastrophic failure

The failure transports you to a random system up to 30,000 LY away, and limits your jump range to 15 LY

This would be an awesome way to force CMDRs do some random exploring as they make their way back to their original destination!

I have to say again. NO, we don't need random Wormholes. If you want a game that has wormholes there A few games out there.

I wish I was English like my hero Tj.
Drive mis-jumps would be a cool feature to re-introduce into the series. I'm not sure how to best go about it, though.

Mechanical and electronic things fail. That's just an inescapable fact.

Depending on the failure mode would determine what happens when they fail... most often things just stop working they rarely do something spectacular. Though thats also mostly because thos failure modes that might cause risk to property ofr humans are engineered to be as low as possible and often have multiple safety systems applied... but there is still the certainty that they will fail eventually.

Some form of failure of equipment in ED would be possible and should be included. There is already an accurate track of the integrity of modules (something we do not have in almost any current systems) so failures that are more common and significant could be easily calculated from continued use of a damaged module.

This should be something that adds a very occasional surprise or a mild inconvenience rather than a 1:100 chance of ending up thousands of light years away...

for example...
a thruster failure might manifest itself as the ship tending to yaw left ...
an FSD failure might result in a jump temrinating early leaving you a couple of thousand light seconds from your target star ...
A fuel scoop failure might reduce scooping rates or not fill your tank all the way to the top ...
a distributor failure might leave you locked in 2 pips to everything ...
a scanner failure might mean some radar objects cannot be seen , or seen but not targetted ...

etc etc

here the problem. We have Exploration ships, Combat ships and Trader. Only one has to have a Fuel scoop. The Exploration ship.

Now let say they add Wormhole or catastrophic failure let view this from a Combat ship or Trader ship and your stuck 30,000 ly away and have NO fuel scoop and not a huge jump range. Are you going to be that Nobel Fuel rat or helpful Explorer that has to slowly follow them back and have to keep mining for minerals and remanufacture Limpets to keep fueling the hopeless Combat Ship or Trader back home? Or are you going to tell them Oh well self destruct?

Let add new players who are still learning the game and doing a little of everything and then Poof thrown 30,000 ly away on a ship that only has 15 ly to 17 ly jump range and no fuel scoop.

Ohh yes and we could find a flat earth there to, or a cube with 6 flat earths wow i can see it happening in ED right now...
Edit; i forgot a fuelscoop and now i'm stuck so far away...

Lol

As funny as that would be, it wouldn't go down well with the player base.

Too much opportunity for instant death, like if you're happily flying your combat FDL, with no fuel scoop, and *fwip* 30,000ly away and no possible way to get home.

Mis-jumps would be cool, but they'd have to be rather short range. Possibly a side effect of FSD malfunction due to heavy damage.
But you'd just end up in a different system within your jump range, rather than the opposite side of the galaxy.

So, the failure can be a result of scooping fuel from a sun that contains imperfections. That way, when the FSD has the catastrophic failure (caused by imperfections in fuel), its guaranteed that your ship has a fuel scoop onboard!

There would be a chance to get home. But who would accept such a daunting and annoying challenge to get you home? A few thousand jumps.

Now this sounds more reasonable and it sounds like the Witch space of the Classic Elite.

Let say some Combat ship and Traders had a small fuel scoop for emergency use or they had a small jump range. Are you willing to wait a few minutes fill your tank? I am not.

Thing is Dunkz17 Wormhole or Catastrophic FSD failure is not going to suit players if they have to fly back 400 to 1,800 jumps.

frontier isnt going to do this.

plus the physics of the FSD would never cause this to happen

when you expirence a catastrophic car engine failure you arent transported 1000 miles across the globe instantly.

You roll maybe a few hundred to a few thousand feet before the car stops depending on how fast its going.
all of your propulsion stops in the event of an engine failure and the FSD would follow that rule as well.
Not only that but because its warping space to propel your ship the warping would stop and your ship would shift back to normal quantum density upon failure.
Once your ship is back to normal quantum density it is no longer traveling at speeds faster than light or near light.
The FSD has to warp space around the ship in order to propel it faster than light because non-quantum particles are incapable of traveling at the speed of or faster than light otherwise
So because of that, the internal spatial field of your ship does not have light-speed or beyond-light speed kinetic momentum,
but because of the difference in quantum density your ship travels at faster than light speed even though its internal kinetic momentum is far less than the speed of light.

An FSD breakdown is not going to randomly propel your ship 30,000LY away from home. I can see getting stuck between star systems maybe.
but you arent going to go from canada to europe because your engine malfunctions.

So if You have 60 ly jump range. If anything you be stuck between 1 Ly away from your first jump point to 59 ly jump in between 60 ly jump range. Which I would be fine with. Maybe 1 or 2 ly in an off direction.
