Caved and got Voice Attack and the Venus pack

So as the title says I finally caved and orderEd voice attack and the hcs Venus voice pack. I use an x55 hotas so when I learnt about voice attack I kind of brushed it off a bit because I have all my controls at my finger tips. Then when I realized that the voice packs bring so much more than voice controls I had to get it. Going to set it up tonight now while I'm in super cruise I can learn and talk to the ai. Pretty stoked. I'm hoping that some of the ship functions like reboot and repair are accessible with voice commands as those are the only ones that I can't just map to my hotas. If anyone has any pointers let me know and thanks in advance.

The key binding can be a pita until you realize what you need to do. Load one of the VA binds files in game then simply bind your x-55 commands into the right hand row so you aren't overwriting Venus' controls. I wish it was more like the HCS videos where you could have full conversations with the AI. Maybe I'm missing something or haven't made enough commands in VA it's self though (so I don't have to be as specific with ASTRA).

All in all, I think you're in for a treat though. I find the HCSpacks are awesome but they just need a little extra work to personalize them for yourself.

Edit: make sure you train the speech recognition software on your computer too. Preferably a few times in different levels of background noise. Otherwise Venus won't know what you want and potentially get confused. I said frame shift, not dump all cargo... That kind of thing.

interesting. I completely disregarded VA for the same reason (X52-Pro) - be intereested in knowin what the extra features are that VA and the Venus pack brings...

will do some research.

ta :)

Awesome thanks for the info. I just have to train windowe built in speech recognition right? Can I modify the Venus commands to reflect my control mappings or us it better to adjust my control mappings to match? I have a slightly modified version of the default x55 setup.

Once I started using HCS, (I have Astra and Jazz packs), I only really used my HOTAS for flying and shooting. I let the girls manage everything else for me.

I've found it's best to just rebind the x55 along side of the VA commands. Otherwise you've got to not only change them in game but also in VA itself.
In the in game controls menu, there are two columns. Once you move the HCS binds files and select the layout from the in game drop down menu, Venus will have all her commands in the left column. You'll just have to rebind your HOTAS to the right column manually.
I just use the windows default speech recognition software. There'll be a little tooltip when you start VA that'll tell you where to go to set up the software. When it comes to modifying the commands in VA, I should've mentioned I meant the spoken commands so you can have some variance in what you need to say, otherwise you have to be very specific to initiate a command.

Ah ok perfect, well the only thing I've modified on my x55 is the UI stuff and the look functions because I have edtracker so I just look with my head lol. Hopefully it won't change it around too much as I'm very used to my controls. I guess though I can just yell at Venus if I forget so I don't have to do it :p

I find VA is great for immersion, and like you said, you might need to add (personalise it) with your own take on commands.
It is quite easy to change though.
If you find some commands like "deploy weapons" not to your taste, you can add "guns" or "bring the pain" to the "say command" by using ; in between the words you add and the existing ones.
Also the newer version of VA lets you add a lot of extra random sounds to each command, so you get different replies to each command, you can even easily add a whole folder full if you want.
I have Dark and Astra, i also use power grid on a tablet, again loads of extra labelled buttons, having both these enables me to look for a cheaper Hotas, as i don't really need all the buttons of the more expensive ones.
but i don't like relying on VA, (hence power grid) it can sometimes be a bit unreliable, and you do need to do the voice training a few times.

From my experience all I really had to adjust was turning mouse controls (pitch, yaw, roll) and the mouse widget off. Just write down your x55 commands before you go to rebind them in the HCS layout so you can keep them the same. I don't have Edtracker but I do use my iphone strapped to my headset for mouse look which is pretty close. I think the thing I use Astra the most for is switching between nav-lock on wing mates. She's also pretty useful for random information. Commands like "what is a (celestial object name)" or "hawking said some interesting things" or "briefly tell me about the (ship name)" just add to the immersion that I'm flying an advanced space craft.

I forgot to mention it is also great for sending messages now that it has the windows clipboard command, and even the dictation mode (not very accurate that though).
You can easily create macros for sending pre written messages with a spoken command.

Excellent I'll just rebind I'm hcs so I can keep mine how I like. Ya I really just like the idea of being able to communicate with the ship lol. I'm all for immersive additions to ED.

Thanks for all the input, got it all configured and working. Man is it fun to ask venus to tell me something about quantum theory while blowing up ships.

Oh man i love voice attack. It rocks.

how do you set up the message on the clipboard if you don't mind my asking?

I love voice attack. I got it Managing my Modulus for me. turns on/off my Plasma accelerator, and switches out my SCB & Chaff banks. and it deploys them when i tell it to.

Quick question here: if my spoken english is awful and i really mean awful, voice attack will work for me?
As an example i tried voice command on raspberry pi and every time i tried to get a lightbulb on (with vocal command lightswitch on) the software interpret my say of on as p o r n . Yeah funny i know but disappointing for me.

Big fan of Voice Attack. I too, was slightly concerned at how good it would be with my broken mix of Cockney-esque mumbled words. I don't know if it's due to me running the windows speech recognition a few times, or that speech recognition has got load better over the years, but it picks me up fine on both my half-decent headset and crappy webcam mic. Very impressed.

The real fun comes after you've got used to binding loads of alternate ways of saying stuff. You can forget "correct" commands and just natter away. For a laugh, try setting up custom responses to tell a joke or prompt it to take the mickey out of yer mates when they pop over.

@Kazacy: I'm guessing that if it's really struggling with commands, try using what it thinks you're saying as the command trigger.
For example, bind "light storm" or something might work if it can't understand you saying "lights, on". The only issue I've had is opening 'comms' on occasion when I clear my throat. Surprisingly useful side-effect.
