CGs should start Friday night or Saturday morning

I think a better solution could be to actually have bonus goals if the main goal is reached, the we automatically add another tier, much like how it was done when they added extra tiers to a very popular CG regarding certain mega ship a while back, that many players wanted to contribute to. This way, a CG should always run the fixed time and popular CG should have a bonus reward, and this should allow anyone to be able to join the CG during it entire time frame, without having to risk that the goal is reached to early and thus they could miss out to join the effort.
