CH Combatstick vs CH Fighterstick

I'm planning on getting a CH throttle (a mini stick, 3 4-way hats + 4 buttons) and either the Combatstick or Fighterstick.

They both have a 8-way hat, a 4-way hat and 4 buttons. The Combatstck has an extra 2 buttons for a total of 6, whereas the Fighterstick has an extra two hats for a total of 3 4-way hats, but no extra buttons.

Ignoring price (there's only $30 between them) will I find the extra hats more useful or would they just be too confusing and would the extra buttons be preferable?

The hats count as buttons. You can't have too many buttons, and you can't add more buttons. Go with the Fighterstick. :)

By the way, Amazon.com has both the stick and the throttle for $50 off each if you've got amazon prime.

Personally I'd go for the Combat Stick, sometimes less is more. With the number of hats on the throttle and then all the mode switching the extra hats are kind of irrelevant.
There's times you just want to hit a panic button without having to think about NESW as well.

Hi,

i was in kind of same "trouble" as you. Had lot of doubts between combatstick and fighterstick. Personally was more inclined for the combatstick for those 2 ease to access buttons (you can emulate them with hats, but i thought that could be more confortable to be plain buttons).

Then i thought that if i kind of liked more the combatstick and i had doubts between boths, why should i pay the extra 40€ if i even prefered the cheaper one?

If you have also the pro throttle, with the combatstick there are way enough hats, also dont forget aboug the shift button that duplicate the number. The 2 button i found very handy, as the top button is not confortable for my hand size, and thouse 2 extra are very convenient and easy to access.

I am really happy with my decision.

The thing i am still missing is the easy of jaw, still trying to map it to one hat or using the jaw on initial roll that elite provides, not really happy with any of them yet. I had before an x52 pro (it was too flashy for me, realised that i wanted more old fashion ;) ) and it was more confortable in it. For the rest, ch is better. Anyway, you will have that thing (no jaw axis) with both combatstick and fighterstick.

I found one little inconvenient thing... not for Elite, but for SC (i am alpha backer of SC too). HOTAS mapping of SC is poor compared to Elite (or that is what i think). Fighterstick has a bigger community than Combatstick, you will find more mapping files to download for Fighterstick. That is the main downside i found with my combatstick.

I dont play other, more pro, flight simulators, maybe for them fighterstick is better, dont really know.

Anyway, i think that if you get the combatstick, it will not feel wrong :)

Besides my TH Warthog, I also got a CH Fighterstick, mainly to go along with my other stick when I don't want to deal with its stronger springs.

I actually feel that the hats on the Fighterstick are quite okay to use and I wouldn't want them replaced by buttons.

I use all the hats on the stick for various functions.

The POV hat (or actually trimming hat) is used for views, though once I finally get of my lazy ass and set up my TIR5 I'll relegate it to menu pointer duties.

The TMS (Target management switch), the hat below the pickle button, is used for targeting in front, nearest hostile and switching through targets.

The DMS (Display/Data managment switch), the hat below the POV hat, is used for targetting hostiles and subsystems.

The CMS (Countermeasure switch), the one on the side of the stick is used for switching weapon groups and currently serves as a back up for left/right lateral thrusters, though this last function will also be switched to switching left and right tabs in menus.

The NWS button on the right side of the stick is used for recentering the view and the Pinky switch is used for boost.

All in all, I wouldn't want to miss my hats, as I can quite easily use them all and have many important functions right on my stick.
Trigger and Pickle buttons are used for Primary and Secondary fire.

Fighter Stick. More hats! The thumb hat is especially very useful for cycling targets and modules. Need more hats still!

I got the Saitek x55. 3 hats on the joystick plus 2 hats on the throttle and I use them all.

1 for power management.
1 for thrust up down left right
1 to pick between the 4 menus in your ship
1 to navigate through those menus
1 for headlook or choosing targets, depending on if I activate headlook or not

It's so convenient to flick left to get into the navigation menu, then flick a couple more times to request docking or set a jump point.

So my vote goes to the fighterstick

Fighterstick vs CombatStick

Slightly off topic (excuse me), but tried to get the Amazon.com offer and its stating that its not eligible for Prime.

Can you post a link to the offer ?

Hmmm it looks like it's no longer being offered for Prime free shipping. If you search for CH Products, they still have the little "prime" icon, but when you click on the item now it's no longer prime. Bummer.

On the bright side, the price is still the same. You can pick up a fighterstick and pro throttle for USD $97 each. You just won't get free shipping.

I think you misunderstand how/what Prime is.

It doesn't get you cheaper prices. It will get you free shipping on any item sold by Amazon, but not third-party sellers. Regular people can still buy items with that little 'prime' logo. You can also get free shipping, though it's not the 2-day shipping, and there's a minimum amount of $25 per order.

Spend the extra for the Fighterstick. The 4-way + pushbutton hat under your thumb is a good match for the way the two side menus work in the game. And you'll still need another two commands for the top tabs in the menu on another switch. More switches are better in this game.

Plus, if you ever get a Warthog HOTAS, it's exactly the same layout on the stick (plus a lower paddle button), so you won't have to change your flying habits. :D

FWIW, I used a Fighterstick for many years before upgrading last year to a Warthog set. The build quality is great, never had a problem with it (or with the CH throttle I used along with it). I'm sure the build quality is the same on the Combat Stick, but the extra switches are worth the money.

Between the CH Throttle, rudder pedals, and EDTracker, I have enough controls without the extra hats. I went with the CombatStick. I still have some buttons / hat directions I haven't bound.

I had the same dilemma, and went with the Fighterstick because I got it in a bundle off e-bay. I recommend it, those 4 way hats are awesome, and Elite has a lot of stuff to bind.

i really like them... but since i can't use pedals, i'll have to stick to something with a twist handle :(

I'm on X52 at the moment.
Although it served me well for quite some time, it starts to malfunction a bit.
Next time i'd like to have something that feels a bit more sturdy.

Maybe i'll get me a CH throttle and try to find a nice stick going along with it...

For avoiding the pedals I recommend the CH throttle and the T.16000M

i have a razer nostromo next to my throttle to handle power distribution and ui navigation. it provides me with much flexibility for my hotas mapping as well as a full page of fps mappings for the day when we can get up out of our seats.

CH Fighterstick & Pro throttle USB

I have just joined in the fun & have resurrected my old CH Fighterstick & Pro Throttle. I can't remeber anything about programming the buttons etc. does anyone have a step-by-step gude as to how to do this? Any help much appreciated. BMW
