Hardware & Technical Ch Pro Throttle & Other (Eg. Thrustm. 16000m) Joystick Combo, Anyone Have A Setup?

(If this is not the right forum, please move)

I got a fantastic deal on a CH Pro USB throttle and also have a Thrustmaster 16000m joystick coming.

I see that many use this same combo. (The 16000m is considered one of the best "budget" JS and the Ch Pro Throttle arguably the best throttle). (Ok, not counting the high-end HOTA setups)

Anyone have a good setup for this combo...or at least a meaningful setup for the Ch Pro Throttle with non-CH joysticks?

Wish I could help you, but I've got the full CH HOTAS: fighterstick, pro-throttle, and pro-pedals. CH's hardware works best together, since you can take full advantage of the scripting language, and how their hardware communicates with each other.

I will tell you my setup as far as my throttle is concerned:

Throttle - controls the throttle, of course

Pinky Trigger - swaps roll and yaw axis - good for aiming
Ring Trigger - flight assist off
Middle Trigger - select

Index Hat - Power Distribution
Mini-Joystick - Lateral and Vertical Thrust
Top Thumb Hat - Menu navigation
Bottom Thumb Hat - Comm systems
POV Hat - minor functions (ex: landing gear, scanner range, lights)

I don't use the button on the mini-joystick for anything, because that dang thing is difficult to keep centered enough as it is. I recommend using a 5% deadzone so you don't get unwanted thrust.

I have a lot more functions than these on my throttle, but many of them require CH's scripting language to use

Here's mine :-

I use the throttle as forward-only, with the right hand trigger button as the reverse toggle.
Middle trigger is frameshift
Left trigger is boost
Thumbstick is lateral/vertical thrust, with generous deadzone as per ^^^
Index finger hat controls landing gear, comms, drop heatsink
Top thumb hat is left/right HUD panels and then cycle through the panels is up/down
Middle thumb hat is target selection left/right, and fire groups up/down
Bottom hat is scanner range selection up/down, and left/right is currently spare and unbound

I don't use any scripting on it/modes.

I don't have a throttle, but managed to figure out a nice setup for my T.16000m:

Besides the obvious stick usage, I have the thrust yaws bound to my hat switch. Initially, I wanted to use those for different purposes, but found out that it's best to use it as a thrust axis (thrust up/down/left/right). The only thing I've bound to the side buttons is thrust forward and backwards, as well as jettison all cargo.

For the rest I use VoiceAttack. I can't imagine playing this game without it. It costs 8$, which is quite a cheap price for something as useful.

If you don't want to use the VoiceAttack app, make the best possible usage of your throttle. It seems to have a few extra axis buttons, which can be used for assigning points into weapons/systems/engines. I'd also bind the following things on it: toggle reverse throttle, engage Frame Shift Drive, toggle silent mode, look to left/right/front panels, engage cargo scoop.

I suppose you can figure out the rest with experimentation. The most important thing is to choose what works best for you.

Yes I figure I will spend a day or so just experimenting..anyway very helpful.

Do I need to install the CH Pro software as well?

Also..in regards to the Thrustmaster TARGET software...do you need to start the game from within the target software or can I calibrate and can start the game normally without having to start from within target? (This only in case I find it necessary that I want to use TARGET to calibrate the Joy axes...)

I haven't had the need to ever use the TARGET software. The stick works like a charm out of the box.

Yes this is correct but there may be reasons why someone would want to use it. For example, for me I need to get used to the fact that you have to move the stick really FAR to max the range of motion out. (Especially coming from a XBOX controller...)

So I played with the Target software (changing the curves etc.) to make it "more sensitive" so I need to move the stick less, and also add a small deadzone in the middle, stuff like that.

Target is VERY finicky (out-of-the box it won't run under Win8.1 - ALSO there was a problem with it recognizing the POV HAT) so I actually had to learn the scripting language a bit.

But I solved all those problems. So if anyone has this stick and problems with TARGET with Win8.1 etc. I can help! (I might even write a small beginner's guide here somewhere)

Using a slightly older (converted) version of the CH Throttle, but I use:
Pinky finger button: UI toggle
Middle finger button: Firegroup select
Index finger button: Boost
Index finger Hat: Up/lights, Down/silent running, Left/landing gear, Right/cargo scoop
Bottom hat: rudder (bagged pedals from eBay now, so will change)
Top hat: UI tabs l/r
PoV hat (newer throttles = ministick): Lat/vert thrusters
Thumb button (not on newer throttles): reverse throttle.

Top tip: if you're out of warranty or don't care, open up the throttle and add a *tiny* dab/smear of silicone grease to the little teflon sliders inside the throttle. Absolutlely silky-smooth response without that initial friction will be yours thereafter.

Oh that's funny you mention silicone grease. I live in Spain right now in a very small town and yesterday I actually went out to buy "silicone grease" in the only store who would carry something like that.

I come home with a huge syringe-thing and obviously cannot really read what exactly it is. It said silicone on the bottle :)

So I used this stuff on my TM..and low and behold it HARDENED out (at first it seemed like it would actually be a grease : )

Funny thing, my wife actually wondered why I didn't know that..so I felt like an idiot.

I actually have a bottle of silicone oil/lube as well so I am using this right now. Real "silicone grease" I guess I have to get from ebay....and yes, people say NOT to use anything petroleum based like Vaseline, it may eat the plastic parts... but yes, Silicone grease help to revive old, gnarly sticks
