CHAINED MISSIONS

As chained missions go, they are not what i think they should be, one destination should lead to the next and the next - for a total of 5 - using the various types of missions already included in the game - example, a planetary base scan gives you part 2 of the mission, which then leads to part 3 and so forth - with an extra bonus when all parts are completed in a time specified - if late, you get rewarded only the 5 parts listed in the original mission

At this point they are kinda unrelated and are tested. FD have much more specific plans for them.

Chained missions are always going to be tricky, because people want different things from them.
Some want a 'rescue the princess' story where you recover an escape pod, then scan a base to find the pirate lord who you can destroy for riches and reputation.
Other people want to deliver cargo to A, then new cargo to B, then different cargo to C.
Plus any number of other combinations.

I think there's scope to include a wide variety of mission chains though. I mean even Choose Your Own Adventure books have branching storylines.

I would really like to rescue someone in an Escape Pod and then hire them as a co-pilot. But she has to look and sound like a princess [heart]

and she has to be in another castle.

Wouldn't that just be filtered by the first mission. Some one who just wants to haul isn't gonna take a bounty hunter mission that ends with them fighting a dragon in a castle.. huh. You know what I'm saying.

The hauler would take the data delivery mission, that then branched off into this epic delivery adventure. etc etc.

It's not like any of this is new or ground breaking stuff in open world mission design.

Yeah. All basic simple problems that have been solved ages ago in other games. Nothing mutually exclusive about having different types of scenarios that can play out.

With every update, they add a teeeeeensy tiny bit more to chained missions. I don't know what's going on behind the scenes that requires it to be this slow, but it *seems* like they're trying to eventually get things to be the way you describe.

I don't know if things have improved much in the past eight months (I've been out exploring that long), but the last time I saw them, chained missions had this major roadblock: all the follow-up missions were kill/assassinate/blow up. Hello, I just did a trade run for you. Ask anybody, I've never assassinated anybody before and don't plan to start now. Why would you think I'd be a good assassin or terrorist? I would at least need to either go away and fetch my combat ship, or radically rebuild my trader Python into a combat Python.

Ugh. These are so annoying. When I was doing lots of cargo and donation missions for rank grind, I must have had 3 or 4 chain missions on every mission board. Yeah, thanks for those 3 assassination missions. good thing I'm in a CARGO SHIP!

Yes it should also be more story driven imo.

Agreed.
They're definitely still a work in progress.
I'm hoping some of these mid-season beyond mini-updates will have some significant updates to the chained missions.
They really need to be more streamlined and feel like an actual related chain of events. As it stands now, they're just more missions in the list with a different symbol next to them.

I doubt any player would go against the idea of chained-missions being more story driven. I also appreciate this is much, much more complex to code and we could either end up with:

1) Ideally: a procedurally-driven, complex range of stories and idea that relate to the BGS and past actions
2) More likely: a set of template stories shoe-horned into the current mission board

Stories that are detective based, hunt based, helping stop a war, avoiding a war starting, subterfuge, multi-part spying - including taking photos and recordings, discovery - the types are endless, should be invigorating, could also be BGS impacting, and perhaps (in certain circumstances) could encourage PvP [by creation of opposing missions]

Thanx for the comments Commanders, if Fdev ever or even reads these comments at all, Maybe at some point some or all of these ideas will be implemented since it could be easily accomplished using the current in-game assets - IMO, the creators are so focused on new additions (instead of the proper tweaking of the emplaced missions that are currently broken) only adds more alterations to current assets - which causes confusion or actual anger for those same alterations. It was said that after all alterations are in place, Fdev will address these conflicts. - time will tell - tho i think at some point it may become impossible to accomplish.

I believe the intent is to have each mission that is chained on to be optional, as we did have chained missions that were not options and they were not well received.

So you decide to necro your own thread whilst not reading it. These linked / follow-on / multi-part missions were in the game and were removed because they were rubbish and people didn't like them.
