Hardware & Technical Chair recommendations (UK Based)

Hi I'm after some recommendations for a good office or gaming chair. My current one is years overdue needing to be replaced. It's got to be 15+ years old now and the foam in the seat has compressed making it hard on the old bottom after a couple of hours and I'm pretty sure it's not helping my lower back pain either.

I've had a look on Amazon and other sites but there's just pages of these cheap looking executive or gaming chairs which have very variable reviews, usually concerning the quality of them. I don't want to be buying something that's going to be coming apart at the seams after 6 months.

So I'm after a decent office chair with good back support. My current chair's back rest height is about 50cm, so something that high or higher is needed. I don't need a head rest as I tend to end up sitting forward when I'm playing but it is nice to lean back and relax every now and then. So some form of back tilt would be nice, preferably full chair tilt rather than just the back, but I'm open on that. Also fixed arms preferably, but that depends on the quality of the chair, as I find adjustable arm rests have a tendency to slip down if too much pressure is applied to them. My current chair has fixed arms and I have no problem with them. Oh and I'd prefer a fabric covered chair rather than the faux leather look, as the fabric is generally harder wearing and is more breathable too.

Price range, well I'm looking at about £150 tops if I'm honest, could possibly squeeze a bit more though if it's a really good buy, as I would rather have something that's going to last me a good few years rather than a good few months.

Any recommendations of chairs you've tried and tested or good brands etc, I'd be most grateful thank you.

I have it's bigger brother and it's comfy as anything and built like a tank. I tried another manufacturer AKRacing and found their build quality shocking. a cross welded frame support in the back broke within a month. the support staff at overclockers (off the record) said they'd received a few back with the same issue this and other build issues. now I dunno if it was a dodgy batch, but i haven't had any regrets with my DXRacer :)

I have a DX Racer King Series. I'm about 15 stone (of pure muscle of course) and its a big very comfortable chair. I cannibalised the old one to make it into a foot rest, tilt the chair seat back, feet on the rest with its tilt forward and its almost like a zero g in comfort. I got the extra head pillow too and with that and the back of the chair actually above my head its just great.

Highly recommended.

The only thing that was a bit confusing, is that all the different sites seem to be some kind of reseller branded network as, they have different stock in Europe. I Ordered one from the Polish site and it gave me a delivery of 4 weeks , which I was not happy with and another DX Racer branded site delivered in a week. The polish site, to be completely fair, refunded immediately on request.

If I may suggest, unless a chair has springs with a hessian type filling, it isn't worth the money.

Most modern chairs are essentially just foam with rubber strips for springing. I've even seen chairs being described as 'Sprung with Belt Rubber'.

Complete waste of money.

Recently, chairs using gas to create a spring have emerged. But the seat is still a bit of wood with a piece of foam stuck onto it.

I can't remember the last office chair that I've ever sat on that was properly sprung, and I worked in IT support for over 12 years, so I've sat in a lot of different office chairs.

Anyway thanks for that, I didn't think of Overclockers, never realised they sold all that type of stuff as well, and I've just been buying a few bits for a new computer build from them too. £200 might just be a little too rich for me, however having said that I do really like the look of this one. https://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=GC-046-DX&groupid=702&catid=2804 Hmmm, I might have to see what I can do.... Chaz like you i've worked in the tech world for ages and I can attest that it'd be money well spent. and if you do have an issue you know what overclockers customer service is like :D

Understood.

I took the seemingly erroneous notion that you were intending to put this into your home, from the reference to gaming and office.

This way out of your price range and lacks some of the cred of an offcie chair, but with a suitably well trained partner to bring you a cup of tean now and again, this could be real gaming comfort.

Well that looks like a chair from an old peoples home and I'm sure you can get them like that as a commode.

I do have a bendy USB clamp on lamp though. Very handy for nocturnal gaming sessions. Oh and I have big draughtsmans board to do my painting on AND I've got a big free standing office fan just a couple of feet away from me too. No room for a big lazy boy chair though.

No, it doesn't.

It's actually a very comfortable, sprung chair which tilts electrically.

Outrageously comfortable. Ideal if you have a tendency to fall a sleep quite often, which I increasingly do.

Get an Aeron, maybe 2nd hand to get cost down? They are expensive, but are built like a tank, and I have never had back pain with mine, suffered a slipped disk in 2002... Bought in 2005, ten years on, it looks like its new. In real terms its cost me roughly £60 per year as it was £600 in 2005. But of course with each year, that relative cost drops :)

Another recommnedation for the Aeron here, extremely comfortable and supportive of the back (get one with the lumbar support if you have lower back problems). I've bought two second hand off an ebay seller who specialised in them, and they've both been fine.
