Ships Challenger vs Chieftain (info and some stats from tonight's stream)

  • Challenger packs a slightly bigger punch then the Chieftain, with 1 large hard-point on the Chieftain (2L 1M 3S) being swapped for 2 mediums on the Challenger (1L 3M 3S), giving the Challenger a weapon DPS advantage over its sister ship.
  • Its a bit heavier then the Chieftain.
  • It has more armour then the Chieftain.
  • Because of the extra weight and armour, the Challenger has a very slight decrease in manoeuvrability compared to the Chieftain, you shouldn't really notice much of a difference.
  • Has better shields then then Chieftain.
  • Has more internal slots then the Chieftain.
  • Both ships have their roles.
  • Challenger focused on Combat due to Thargoid Incursions.
  • No SLF capability for Challenger.
  • 1 additional multi-crew seat compared to the Chieftain.
  • 4 utility slots for the Challenger.
  • Around 26M to 30M Credits for the Challenger, depending on shipyard location, discounts etc.
  • Due to extra weight, jump range for the Challenger will be slightly less compared to Chieftain. Stock configuration will give you around 8Ly.

Core Internal Slots:

  • Size 6 Power Plant
  • Size 6 Thrusters
  • Size 5 FSD
  • Size 5 Life Support
  • Size 6 Power Distributor
  • Size 4 Sensors
  • Size 4 Fuel Tank

Optional Internal Slots:

  • 2 x Size 6
  • 2 x Size 3
  • 2 x Size 2
  • 3 x Size 4 (Military)

Thanks

But honestly don't see the point of this ship...

Thanks

But honestly don't see the point of this ship...

It's better than the Chieftain and is definitely a better designed anti-thargoid ship. If anything, it makes the Chieftain pretty much useless in my opinion. The Challenger is what the Chieftain should've been in my opinion.

Honestly, I'm leaning towards just switching everything out of my Chieftain into the Challenger when I get it at this rate.

For me it all hinges on how much slower/less maneuverable it is than the chieftain. e.g. If its slow to turn like the Python, I'll stick with the chieftain.

I do like the Nacelles on the chief better however; seemed more physics appropriate.

I'm happy with the stats and this ship as a whole but I'm wondering what the point in giving us the Chieftain was now? Since this ship isn't that much of an upgrade to the Chieftain, I'd rather they released either the Chieftain or the Challenger for 3.0 and a different, ideally non-combat orientated ship alongside the Krait this time around. On the upside, most of the modules on the Chieftain will be transferable onto the Challenger, so there the time put into engineering our Chieftains won't have gone to waste.

Yeah, I was thinking that as well. The only thing I'll need to do is engineer 2 new medium hardpoints and will have a second beam laser sitting in storage which isn't a bad thing.

So we get 2 more combat rigs

but

no medium sized Saud Kruger or Gutamaya ships yet

Why???

I wouldn't call the Krait MkII a combat ship, it's multi-role to me...

Back to the Chieftain <-> Challenger comparison, I also a mystified by the Challenger's release as well, in the livestream they said they don't think it make the Chieftain redundant but in all honesty it does.

If both ships were available when 3.0 dropped I would have bought the Challenger, it's just better in almost every dept. maybe due to weight it may not jump as far but really both ships are bubble ships so with a decent scoop jump range doesn't matter that much.

I didn't get the Chieftain straight after 3.0 dropped as I was quite happy using my FDL for combat related stuff but after the canopy 'fix/buff' I took the plunge and love it now, so fun to fly but could be one of the first ships I ever dumped when I move to the Challenger. And I've only had it a couple of months unlike all my other ships which I've had for years. Even my original sidey and Cobra.

Oh well goodbye Chieftain it's been fun.

There's something i never quite understood with the Chieftain and now the Challenger. They're supposed to be Alliance/Lakon's answer to fight Thargoids, but with no small anti-thargoid weapons, why would such manufacturer fit them with 3 small weapon slots?
Sure these slots can be very usefull for several other activities, but they are useless against thargoids.

So why FD would announce these ships as anti-thargoids ships, and still not give us small ax/guardian weapon variants?
