Challenger weapons advice, pleade.

Hi.

Just bought a Challenger and have kitted it out (as is my wont) with an all muticannon loadout. All guns are overcharged, with corrosive on the large hard-point, incendiary on the 3 medium hard-points and autoloader on the 3 small.

I'm now wondering, however, as to whether it may be beneficial to swap the small multicannons for burst lasers and have one more of the medium multis set for corrosive. All are gimballed, btw.

Whaddya reckon?

Also, Is there a quick and easy way of seeing where each hard-point actually is on the ship?

Cheers.

Put railguns on the smalls? I dunno, kinda need more to go on than this. What are your intentions?

Corrosive doesn't stack and comes with an ammo capacity penalty, so you don't want more than one.
If anything I'd change the corrosive to one of the smalls or med, and maybe even use hi cap instead of OC.
Then put autoloader or oversized on the c3, keeping the OC.

Idk I really don't get the Challenger. I'd much rather have 1 large hardpoint than 2 mediums. I know that the 2 mediums add to more damage (vs small ships) and let you use more Guardian rails, but still, it feels like a downgrade.

If I had to pick something it would probably be:

1 pacifier/APA
3 plasmas/rails
3 rails/Cytos/enforcers

Dakka Dakka. All MCs; thermal (2x2) corrosive (1x1) rest OC with Autoloader (class 3 I have rapid fire with AL because the load rate is based on fire rate, so faster you shoot, faster it crams ammunition in). Quite fun. You can thank me later.

Or frags. Frags are fun too.

Best hardpoint overviews oog I can think of are Cmdr Arithon's ship blueprints (latest versions), but afaik he hasn't done the Challenger or Krait yet.

I'm also pondering atm to give the Challenger a try to determine if it can replace my BH Chief, but like Ziljan said, I'm not sure if I like to trade one large for two medium hardpoints.

The weapon loadout on that Chieftain shout be easily modified for the Challenger, at the moment I got

2x large fixed efficient thermal vent beam
1x medium turreted long range scramble spectrum pulse
3x small long range plasma slug rails

and still love soloing a HazRes in it.

Ack - never really bothered comparing the hardpoints on the Chal / Chief - I'd assumed they would be better on the Chal but it has less L hardpoints - doh! I thought it seemed slower to kill scouts, now I need to do a proper comparison with the chief [up]

OP.

Thanks for the replies so far, everyone.

Some caveats to future suggestions:

1) No fixed weapons (I'm crap)
2) No guardian stuff (not even begun to unlock it)
3) Not aimed at PvP (ever), or Thargoids (yet)

Also, still looking for a quick way to see which hardpoints in the list are where on the ship. I'm a bit OCD (or CDO - in alphabetical order, the way it should be) and I want it to not look lopsided if I change 1 of the mediums to autoloader.

Cheers.

Put it in the center med slot.

You can see some of the layout here:

1) No fixed weapons (I'm crap)

That's what I thought before I tried certain loadouts in the more maneuverable ships. Beams are a good way to get started with fixed because they're hitscan and you can see where you're hitting all the time, instantly. Otherwise just change the fixed beams to gimballed in my suggestion above.

I'd strongly suggest to at least give the railguns in the small slots a try though, they punch way above their size. You could use them as weapons of opportunity for shredding large enemies' internals with super penetrator or to stop those SCB-spammers from recharging using the feedback cascade experimental.

Re hardpoint placement:

Large hardpoint and 3 smalls are on the "roof" fairly close together. These hardpoints have fairly bad firing arcs when aiming "below the horizon".
All 3 medium hardpoints are below the cockpit. They have surprisingly good firing arcs when aiming up.

Yeah, finding a right combination on the Challenger is even more complicated than finding the right set for the Chieftain. For now I am trying out three medium shard cannons for dealing with shields and fixed frags on the other hardpoints on the top. Large one double shot, small ones high capacity with drag and corrosive. Shard cannons aren't that bad against hull either. I can unload those on the target while the large frag is reloading.
