Change displayed rank?

Is there a way to change which rank (combat/merchant/exploration) gets displayed when you're in a station or another player selects you as a target? I can't seem to find a way to do this. I much prefer exploration to combat, and I'd rather see my grand blue heron in front of a planet than a timid yellow one barely poking out its wings when I access starport services. I also like "ranger" more than "mostly harmless", and would like the former to be shown under my name in a targeting HUD.

Any help on how to do this would be much appreciated. If it's currently impossible, do you think the option should be implemented?

It's only the combat rank that counts when you are sizing up a potential foe.

Which is is how it should be because your ability as an explorer or trader has no meaning there.

OP, did you know that you can add decals of your current ranks, one or all, to your ship in the livery section? So, for example, if you meet another explorer out in the black they can see your explorer rank from your decal (if you choose to display it).

They can only see your decal if you both disengage supercruise and get within visual range, but the targeting computer will show the rank (which I guess is locked on combat) in supercruise (where just about all exploration takes place). I suppose for trading decals that might work when entering or exiting starports, but then whenever they go to starport services, they see their combat rank bird on the screen instead of their merchant rank. Forcing the combat rank to be displayed over the other two seems to put an emphasis of combat over other gameplay elements, which seems to go against the "galaxy is your oyster" theme this game is striving for. If someone puts in the effort to achieve rank increases in other fields, they should be allowed to display that.

As for sizing up potential foes, I never look at the rank. Ship type, hull and shield condition (mine and theirs), presence of wingmen (again, mine and theirs), and whether their wanted all take priority. Sure a rank can say "expert", but perhaps that ship got all its kills on unarmed freighters instead of against other combat vessels.

Perhaps all three ranks can be displayed on the left "contacts" panel, while their preferred rank is shown on the contact card left of the radar.

They'd still see their favorite emblem on the starport screen? I guess if someone is elite x3 then setting a preferred status becomes a tiny bit redundant. But I doubt that's a very large group of players. And if a player has an aversion to fighting, they'll never reach elite in combat. Even if they're elite in trading and exploration, all that anyone else will see is their combat rank, and each time that player opens a computer screen at a starport, they'll see the combat bird next to their commander name, instead of one of the more impressive birds for which they've invested hours into the game.

All three ranks should be displayed, so that you know better who you're dealing with. Since they gave us three different paths to Elite, there is no reason to count only one.

Why is rank displayed in the first place? If there was a option to do so I would turn off the display of my rank for other ppl.

Because the rating is established by an in-game organization of which we are all members and is thus public knowledge.
When you say "all" who are you referring to? Human pilots? NPC pilots? Both? Also isn't this the same organization that gives us the CMDR title display?

It is, yes. The Pilot's Federation.

I don't believe the NPC's are members? But I've never been clear on that point. Clearly it does assign them ranks, members or no.

If it required using the Kill Warrant scanner to give detailed information I would be happy with that. That way the information is still out there & still available it just wouldn't be every Tom, & Mary that knows everything about you. It would only be those that have fitted the necessary equipment.

Even if this were possible, I'd consider anyone showing up as an "Elite Trader" to be easy pickings.
It's only about 8600 kills to Combat Elite anyway, entirely doable in about 3 months or so with an average of 100 kills a day.
