Change of career! Advice needed.

Hey all, been poking about on ED for a few months now, soley as a combat pilot, doing missions, bounty hunting, CZs....etc.
But I fancied broadening my horizons (pun) abit more. However, I don't actually own horizons.

Anyhoo, I was thinking of trying out trading or mining, or smuggling... Just to mix things up abit, while still earning money to my next goal of a Python (again).

I currently have an A rated FDL, which I'm keeping, plus an A rated DiamondBack Scout, with a sorta combat-explorer-smuggling setup, but I more of less use it as a taxi cos of the 22ly jump range. Lol
Plus about 35 mil credits.
Now I wanna keep about 10mil as a backup for rebuying the FDL should I get it blown up.
So I have 25 mil to buy a ship, ideally multi purpose so I can switch careers easily. And outfit, and buy cargo etc.

So, what I'm asking is, what's your advice?
Should I try mining, trading or smuggling... Or is there something else I should try?
What ship and set up should I use? Etc

BTW, I'm only peddler rank in trading.
Ideally something I can pick up and put down easily, as I sometimes don't get much time to play at all.
Thanks in advance!

Well that was easier than expected. Apparently the nearest pristine system is ..... My neighbour! Lol
Turns out my home system is even better!
'Pemoeri' the land of everything. Except outfitting.
HighRES is 3ls from port.
I can claim all bounties, except alliance from the port.
Alliance space is 1 jump away.
Leesti is a mere 30ly away for good outfitting.
Delkar (4ly) has pristine rings all over the place.

Lol I chose well.

Only downside now is I can't find a damn Asp for sale anywhere!

Try this site to find your Asp.

https://eddb.io/

Look in stations tab, select the asp in the ship drop down and select your system in the reference system box to find stations selling the Asp close to you.

Job done :)

The type-6 is also a good miner and costs much less. I use a shieldless one to mine in my secret pirate-free system ;)
But if you think you'll get shot at, maybe the Asp is better =)

I found an Asp, I used wikia. Lol
Station it's in has even worse outfitting than my home system, so its just got a few mining lasers and pulse lasers, cargo rack and refinery. That's about all for now. Hopefully I can pop on later and get it to a system with better power plants and things cos its all E rated right now, cos that's all they sell! Lol

I took my DBS to the rings, and dropped out at a random spot. Within 30 seconds I was scanned by system security and another clean NPC showed up. Lol

So I think I'll stick with shields. Lol

Update 1: Mining, Day 1

Well, I've thrown together a basic mining Asp, and I've headed of to the rings of Delkar to make my riches amongst the stars!
Only I hardly made any money. About 100k I think in an hour.
Not sure what I'm doing wrong but I've tried mining in the rings, stealing from miners in the rings, and mining in the asteroid belts.
Didn't seem to find anything more valuable than gold most of the time.
I was prospecting the rocks before mining, and using limpets to collect the rocks. (And steal them. Lol). I have a 7 bin refinery so that was pretty lazy work. But I never found any of the good minerals to mine. Painite mostly.
I found a whopping 1 tonne of palladium. But that was it.
So result so far. Spent about 12 million on the Asp and outfitting. Made 100k! 11,900,000cr till I break even!

Any advice out there?

Painite is found in the inner metal rings so try there. It's also a lot of luck involved and sometimes there just isn't any Painite to be found but 10-15 tons is the norm for a medium ship like the ASP per run.

Try a Cobra MK3 not 4, you can fit that Cobra for smuggling. Something like this:
http://coriolis.io/outfit/cobra_mk_...0101.AwRj4yKA.IwBj4jXI?bn=Horizons - Smuggler
You can add a shield if you like, but if you know a little how to fly it you won't need the shield and you have more cargo. Go to an long range smuggling system, personally i prefer HIP 74290 on Pratchett's Disk, take some smuggling missions from here (don't be greedy you can make easy 10 millions per hour), and on the way back every time you are interdicted, submit then boost with maximum speed outside the sensor range of the enemy ship. After that you can go on your way, npc is gone.
Heat sinks are for enemy commanders, same drill submit, engage silent run and try to run away with high jump this time. It's better to have the ship paint as black as possible because you will get a few precious seconds when you are very hard to spot by human eyes (if you don't have black friday skin buy graphite skin is almost the same for this purpose).
In this way you can make a decent credits and it won't feel as a grind, personally i really love this part of the game.
Good luck and have fun.

A nice way of earning some Money, ranking up and getting higher trade and exploring ranks is to fly to the fringe of the Federation or Empire bubbles and taking long range missions into the bubble.

I have found a bunch of good systems in the Empire.

Hip 26144
Hip 30252
Hip 31666
Hip 52461
Meintangk
Oppida
Bletones
Zende

Get an advanced scanner as you need to scan a lot of system on the way. I use an Asp with 56 tons of cargo.

ASP and go exploring. Trying it myself properly for the first time and its really peaceful and seeing some cool sights. No idea on return vs investment of credits and time yet but its something new/different to do.

Update: Mining day 2

Given up. Lol I made a measly 100k in an hour again while bring incredibly bored.
So I moved in to trading!
I fitted my Asp out with as much cargo space as I dared (116t / left room for a class 3 shield). And headed off to empire space to do some immoral imperial slave trading. Lol
Currently I'm making about 350k per round trip. Waaaay better than mining. But still kinda dull. Had to switch to solo mode though, cos for some reason I couldn't dock at an empty outpost in Open. Done about 10 runs, now an I'm already getting tired of it. Lol yet to be interdicted by anything.
At least my trade rank has shot up, so hopefully I can try out some smuggling missions soon!
What's better for smuggling, Asp of DBS?
And how do you stop yourself being scanned on station exit?
I'm pretty good at avoiding it going in, but sometimes I get scanned on the way out before I've even cleared the letterbox by a few 100m. Sometimes without the 'ship scanned' warning too.

Smuggling it's not like trading, some of the missions, especially in the beginning, you have a pretty fat chance to fail them. In my opinion try a Cobra MK3, it's the best ship for smuggling, see my previous post.

Well, I decided to try out smuggling. So I headed out to the famed Robigo system.
I just picked up 2 1.5mil shadow missions with both destinations within 20ly of each other. Only problem is that my fuel tank runs out about 60% of the way,so I need to try and refuel at a star without being interdicted. Lol
And for some reason, my ask is terrible at not overheating when refueling. Bah... Oh well, here goes nothing!

Hello Op,

I was going to suggest long range smuggling missions as I think the skills you will learn compliment your combat skills - seems you have already taken the plunge.
It will improve your interdiction mini-game.
It will improve you SC planning and situational awareness.
Heat Management.
Effective running away.

They are all great skills to have. Wish I had half of them!

Well, before leaving i picked up a thrid mission. And I've just completed 3/3 shadow runs without a hitch. Except 1 failed interdiction. But the NPC didn't scan. Just opened fire on my paper-thin shielded Asp.lol
Oh, and boosting far too late in to the letterbox of the port I had to go to, and slamming into the back. But I was OK. Lol
Gonna head back out to robigo and pick up some more now I've gained a rank in trading. Wooh!
That's 4.5mil in an hour-ish (forgot to keep track).

I only had 3 interdictions. 1 almost instantly failed. And the other 2 insta-won. All 3 times I was slowing down to submit. Lol Damn game is still broken.
