They've promised, and keep reassuring us, that Lifetime means lifetime of the entire game. So, unless it flips into an Elite 2 (which might happen one day), we are assured that owners of LEPs receive all updates for free. We don't know if there will be a 5, but whatever comes next we are calling 4 for the sake of continuity. FD may decide to call it something else.

David Braben is on record (somewhere) as saying that he favors a mix of free and paid for content as the game progresses. There are no hints that we have reached the end, unless we see Atmospheric landings and Legs in the same release. In any event, there will be room for further development and, most certainly, bug fixes for the foreseeable future.

The mix of paid for and free content along with cosmetic items is described as business strategy in a (2017?) prospectus as well, along with an expectation of Elite being profitable for years to come.

What exactly has changed about seasons?

The Horizons "season" was included in the Lifetime Expansion Pass, so...
