Changing Commander name

I would hope not - as players will be recognisable to others by their name, changing name would in effect mean that players (who would otherwise wish to associate / run away from the player who had changed their name) would not know who they were.

There are no guilds / corps / etc. at this time so there would be no reason to prepend "<insert tag here>" to players names or remove the tag should a player leave such an organisation.

I see your point, but your previous name could become a 'known alias' and you would still be flagged to interested parties.
After all, you can do it in real life without disappearing from the grid. :)

Is that really so bad?

If you change your name each week sure, but if you limited to one change a year or something, hardly seems that bad.

Changing once a year - probably not so bad. Paying to change every time you finish a ganking spree - not good at all.

Maybe the price to change name should double every time that you change that character's name....

If you are able to change commander names then that name should be auto-changed on people's ignore lists otherwise it's an ignore-exploit! :p

I'm definitely not suggesting it as a way to clear your criminal record or ignore / friend list. All of those things would have to be automatically carried over.
And I agree there would have to be a timer to stop regular changes.

changing name isn't the same as changing accounts though.

I hope we can change names even if it means starting over because I don't like the name I 'reserved' but the backers app won't let me change it anymore :)

I would be perfectly happy if we had one free name change at the start, and maybe limit further changes to one every six months or so (possibly paid for)

Agree.
Given that commander names have to be vetted by FD, it would have to be a paid service. Plus it's a potential earner for FD.

If we get 3 commander slots then it should be as easy as setting up the second slot with a new name. I will be doing that to practice for a week before I start Iron Man with Commander Ref Minor.

Stupid question

For those of us that have joined the process late (alpha backer) When do we get to choose our in game name?

When I was first picking a commander name during the Kickstarter I was informed by a member of FD staff that my first choice -- Jack Schitt -- would likely not pass the sieve for obvious reasons. To be perfectly clear it wasn't a definite "no", more of a strong likelihood, but just to be safe I went for my second choice of my real name.

At the eleventh hour I had a sudden worry that the advice might be wrong, that the name might pass the sieve, and worse yet that someone else might bag it. That would be horrendous, pledging a significant early sum only to eventually watch someone else flying around with my first choice name.

So just before the Backer's App closed I paid £30 to reserve two new commander names under different e-mail addresses, the first being a variation on my real name and the second being Jack Schitt. Both were accepted.

So now I have three reserved commander names but only one active account. I'm guessing if I buy two more copies of the game I can use those extra names for those accounts. What's not clear is whether or not I can merge accounts at some point, or swap reserved names between accounts. Hopefully that'll all become clear once we approach the gold release date.

I would expect it will be possible to start again with a new name as with any new person joining the game. Obviously as time goes on it might be harder to find a name that isn't already taken which was the only advantage of the "reserving" your commander's name reward.
