Changing Commander name

I'm definitely not suggesting it as a way to clear your criminal record or ignore / friend list. All of those things would have to be automatically carried over.
And I agree there would have to be a timer to stop regular changes.

What is the reason to change a commanders name? What were you thinking about in relation to name changes? :)

I do wonder how many people named their commanders in haste, and are now regretting it.

I tried to pick Cmdr. In Haste but it was already taken.
 
I would hope not - as players will be recognisable to others by their name, changing name would in effect mean that players (who would otherwise wish to associate / run away from the player who had changed their name) would not know who they were.

Name changing aside, I hope that /ignore is account based and not commander, and if you were to change your name surely you would tell those that you cared about ? ;)

Given that caveat, I assume there would be no objections ?

(The alternative would be to delete the commander and start again, or use 1 of your 3 slots)

Change of name is not annoying, if it is not in the same game. And then we do not change the name, as we change of socks. Ask oss133 and you will see, he will confirm

I hope it is not, I would rather deal with each commander as it comes, some people will ignore my pirate character because he shoots them, the same people might like my trader.

I'd like to see something like this in game, as a paid service (probably criminal) for those who have the right contacts. It could be used by smugglers and other criminals to either avoid arrest for outstanding criminal records, or to use as cover while committing such acts, and avoid getting black marks against your 'real' name.

Of course this would need to have a chance to fail.

I know that this isn't quite what the OP meant, but I think it's a relevant consideration.

You don't have to use your reserved commander name. It's only a matter of convenience to have it reserved, not an obligation. Of course, there is the chance that any other name you try to use will already be taken.

If you are able to change commander names then that name should be auto-changed on people's ignore lists otherwise it's an ignore-exploit! :p

Exactly, its not a free pass to wipe out your dodgy activities!

I hope we can change names even if it means starting over because I don't like the name I 'reserved' but the backers app won't let me change it anymore :)

Assuming changing commander name doesn't remove them from ignore lists etc and their reputation stays the same I don't really see this as an issue.

Thanks for the link. In a game where progression means we are never likely to ditch our primary character (eg a Trader) for a brief "bit of fun as a pirate", this seems like a good and fair compromise.


Best thing to do is one time change for free before the game go live.

I agree with this. Though if 3 slots (characters) per account is allowed, then I think they should all have different names, since it might otherwise confuse people who have met friendly Cmdr Bloggs the Trader, if the next time they bump into him, he's pointing a massive laser at them and calling them a "land lubber". :eek: :D

If not, it isn't a biggie I guess, I'll just have to consider them each as different members of the family. :cool:

Do we think this might lead to some sort of griefing? I could use slot A as a trader and set up a trade request, then use slot B as my pirate to intercept and kill whoever took up the trade request.

Granted that scenario is based on a fair amount of assumption..but I know it is something that was discussed at length in the SC forum and I believe as such all 3 accounts are linked by reputation or some such...

just hazy thoughts ;)

This, im under the impression that we may have upto 3 commanders. with us kickstarters being able to reserve commanders name. so if you want a different commander it should be very possible.

that would be good - being able to have a few different commanders on your account.

for me that would enable me to play different characters with differing styles, say one as a pirate, one as a trader and another as a bounty hunter, each with a name that is reflective of their purpose.
