Character´s Avatar Customizations

Greettings CMDRs

Sometime during this season we will get the Character customization to create our own CMDRs and since there has been to little information i wonder to what extend that customization will be.
This question came to my mind the other day while i was painting my own CMDR´s avatar from a self portrait of myself:
ScipioHispanicus.jpg

I added some cybernetics parts to the face and also some damage to represent some battle scars. So at this point my question is if the customization will just what we have seen so far, just to choose a random face and color for the suit, or there will be more specific elements to choose from, like the cybernetics, scares, hair style or even face paints as i did with my painting.
I hope it is the latest so we will be able to personalise our characters a lot. And don´t get me wrong, what FD has shown so far looks very promising I just hope it will have more depth.

What do you guys think? Do you even care? For me its a great feature that will bring more inmersion to the experience and a first step to the future update for walking around.

Wow, fantastic painting! Great job :)

I care a lot about good character customisation and like you I want to see loads of different options for cybernetics, scars, tattoos, piercings, lots of hairstyles, a big palette of make-up, aviators, head-wear...

For me, games are more than just an exercise in min-maxing numbers. I play for an experience and anything that makes that experience richer is a good thing. As it currently stands in the game, our ships represent the personality and purpose of the player. I'm looking forward to having a new dimension and more depth in how we project ourselves in the Elite universe :)

I am looking forward to see the character creator in action, too. But since there is no walking around in first person perspective, yet, we won't have many opportunities to see the faces of other players avatars, much less our owns.
Because of that, I am even more looking forward to see the character creator technology applied to persistent NPCs like engineers and minor faction representatives in update 2.1 than to creating our own avatars at this moment!

And to answer your question: I guess we will be able to adjust many aspects of the appearance of our avatars manually via sliders or pull down menus, like skin colour, hair colour, eye colour, facial proportions, etc., but I wouldn't hold my breath when we start talking about some more special features like scars, tattoos or even visible implants. Perhaps we get an option or two, but I doubt that these will provide as much variety as those more standard options mentioned above (colours, facial part sizes etc.)

Well said, Marra, couldn't agree more! :)

I agree both on the artwork and character customisation.

Thanks! So much this, couldn't agree more! I'll be back to rep you for that. ;)

I am glad to see i am not the only one that cares about this feature and is looking forward for it.
I think one way to use the Avatars in game until we get the walking around in first person would be to add a small picture of your avatar every time you open a chat comm or voice comm with another CMDR. That would be a cheap way of adding more immersion to any communication between player and the literal possibility of putting a face to everybody as by the way we will have with the engineers. So it could be weird that we can see an avatar for the engineers, but not for any other player :p

That's a great idea, I love it!

Given the adjustments the mission board part of the UI will get in the next major update, hoping for the comms part of the HUD to get a facelift including character portraits in release 2.3 (when we get our hands on the character creator, see last newsletter or link in my signature for the coarse roadmap of season 2 features) might be more realistic that we think! :)

I'll pretty much agree with Marra :)

And you should totally write a story how your CMDR Scipio Hispanicus got that scar :)
I bet he's an Imp ... :D

I was pleasantly surprised about the quality of the faces as well as their blending into the rest of the "eye candy".
Can't see the customization options, though and how it's done, but the results are pretty good.

Problem with human faces is always the "uncanny valley". You can create a pretty abstract image of a human face that people find pleasing .. :) :D
And you can move towards "realism", and the closer you get, the more those little things that aren't quite right cause feelings of uneasieness (anyone remember the Final Fantasy Movie?)

Somehow I can hardly see myself bothering with the character creator it's just not that important to me, but for those that want it hope you get the level of customisation your looking for

Yes, i really believe it could be done and shouldnt be too complicated to implement.

Yeah, i totally agree with you. As I said at the start, what they have shown looks very good and promising. I am actually surprised of the high quality of the characters models. Looks like they hired a good characters art team, plus the fact I know they have an amazing concept art team.
I just hope that whats been shown so far is the base canvas to add more small features on top of that as i mentioned earlier, which could fit more into a science fiction setting as ED.
