Engineers Charge Enhanced Power Distributor Grade 2 screwed by secondary effects.

I requested that upgrade because I would get something inside the blue and red ranges, but instead, some funny secondary effect gives me -7% of what I would get, outside of the blue range, and then gives me -7% power draw. What's the point? I did the upgrade for it's primary effects, secondary effects shouldn't throw primary outside of the blue range!

It's still an upgrade, is it not? Just a bit of bad luck on the roll made it dip a little lower than you would've expected.

Let's say you go to shop and asks for a 20% higher performance cpu, the seller says "ok", get your money, and then delivers to you a cpu that is only 5% faster but consumes 10% less power. You've paid for a product you didn't ask for.

These dudes tinker and try to upgrade it somehow, where try is the operative word, you just let them experiment on your ship.
Have you never experimented on your motor bike?

THIS IS EXACTLY WHAT I HATE ABOUT THIS "RNGineering" in Elite Dangerous.
Love the title I am keeping it by the way.

When I dropped 5K into my Bimmer and the tunner told me hey congrats instead of 40HP gain you now have 10HP gain but I saved you 12lbs of weight, he would have been hearing from my lawyer real quick.

Where is the fun in this kind of upgrading specially when it takes a while to gain the necessary materials. In beta nobody minded cause it was just fish, but now its just to much for grind for no real gains.

It can happen this way. In higher levels of that mod the odds of that being blue and not reducing it is a lot higher

Umm not to poking fun at the bad roll or anything, but the recipe only has negative effects. You can see that above your secondary rolls. A lot of the Grade 2 recipes offer bigger improvements then Grade 1, but the secondaries are all negative. Hence the hit to what you got. I personally use cheap grade 2 recipes to skip Grade 2 alltogether and aim for the next level, because I don't like that red bar.

Edit: and the recipe page before you preview also says that it has only negative side effects.

So you go for the ones that say there won't be a special effect and not need to role to get the bad side affects.

Actually I go for grade 3, where the plus outweighs the negative. Also not sure if this is still the case, but in the beta the results weren't completely random. The Augmented shield booster max grade recipe was notorious for doing exactly this. Give you resistance, then taketh away with negatives. But if you kept applying it, it gave up.

It means the Power Distributor draws 7% less power from the power plant, 0.76 MW down from 0.82 MW
This is a good side effect

Power draw is separate from the Power Distributor's charge rate or capacity

Yeah, OP meant the very darkened out negative side effects, that took away most of the positive charges in the capacitors he rolled for. So he got +9% on all capacitors, but the negative side effects lowered them by 7% one by one to an end result of +2%. Whcih is still a gain, it just stings.

That's just bloody ridiculous.

"It was performing all right, but then I spilled my coffee on it uring my break and so... well, sorry mate"

Collection RNG + Crafting RNG + Seconday effect RNG => waste of time.

My apologies I did not see the darkened out results

No problem, I had to look twice myself, but had my suspicions. I had the same with the augmented shield boosters in the beta. Needed to roll 4 times for the RNG to finally realize maybe it shouldn't do that. In the end it's still an increase, but I can understand the frustration. When I saw the red bar for the Grade 2 recipies I decided to only use them for leveling up the engineer. At least Tod and The Dweller are easy, as they have CMM composites and HN shock mounts ready for sale nearby.

I'm not a huge fan of EDEng, but this sort of comment confuses me.
If upgrades were an exact science, and a 20% increase in module performance was guaranteed, then you would be offered them as options when you purchase your ship.
The Engineers are geeky specialists who try things on the edge of technology, and their service is more like:
"I can boost your CPU, but I don't know exactly by how much, and there may well be unwanted side effects. Do you want me to try or not?" Which sounds reasonable.

I would not say that there were enough complaints even then, that you needed dozens of rolls to get a somewhat decent result.
Sure ti was easy flying to of of the rngineers with 200 tons of fish and just click reroll until it fitted.

These guys are not engineers, they are tinkerers, DIY guys, whatever but no engineers, as they are totally unable to duplicate an update they just did seconds ago.
