Charity Missions and Influence

I know that charity missions are great for raising reputation but I have also read that while they raise reputation with a faction they also lower the influence of that faction within the system. I've read this in some guides but then it isn't mentioned in others. Does anyone know for sure if this is the case?

Am I actually harming my favourite faction by doing them favours?
