I ventured into the North-West part of the Abyss and besides charting the route I charted a part of the edge (blue line) so we can get a better idea on its actual size.
The blue line is based on my bookmarks and I tried to paint it as realistic as possible. Here is the actual galaxy map showing the same edge.
The yellow dots on the first map are systems visited by commanders so we can clearly how much is left uncharted. The top right stretches further into uncharted space of the Solitude Void while the bottom left seems to continuously descend into the Abyssal Plain but so far I stopped charting at the -12.000 mark (bookmark limit reached). Going further to the east will give a complete picture of the size.
The route I took was done with a modded Conda of 52.9LY (55 on fume) and started from the Precipice (Fleckao GH-U E3-0) which is the end point at which a 33LY ship can go continue to go westwards without jumponium and ended in what I believe is the most North-Western part of the Abyss. I am currently 1710.99LY away from The Precipice and 976LY from Base Camp I, which is where my modded conda needed to use jumponium. It took only 14 J2s and 6 J1s to reach the current destination in 57 jumps x2 for getting back.
In other words, the Abyss can be "relatively easily" explored with modded exploration ships. But expect regular 75LY jumps to reach spider webs or small clusters. Even at the -4500 mark I had a web of 9 systems (the furthest system west in the north is-5100). These kind of jumponium base camps are really important to chart in a region as this (and I'll add mine soon).
I hope this inspires other people to explore the Abyss and gives a better idea on where to go and what to expect.
