I'm stealing ideas from other games again. Don't mind me.
Today's theft is from Arma, those military simulation games. Specifically, their chat channels.
In Arma, you can select your chat channel, and then either type, or speak, and it's broadcast on that channel.
You press < and > to cycle through them.
Very basic really, but actually very functional.
I believe Arma has the following channels;
Global, Side, Command, Group, Vehicle and Local.
A similar system in ED would be pretty awesome, and unlike my previous chat ideas, doesn't require much in the way of additional UI elements or menus.
In order for it to work to full potential, I'd imagine a server based chat system would need to be established for larger scale channels. I have no idea if that's possible. Lol
We could have a "System" channel, which is basically available for anyone in the current system, regardless of instance.
Next is "Power", this channel would allow you to chat to other members of your power, regardless of location. A similar channel called "Faction" would also allow you to chat to anyone in the same minor Faction.
Then you have a "Wing" channel, same as now, it's just for your wing. But with the upcoming Squadron system, a "Squadron" channel can be added, however, anyone in a wing, under a Squadron (if that's how it works), can see and hear anything from Squadron chat. But Squadron chat can not see or hear wing chat.
Then you have Direct and Local channels, which work the same as now.
To prevent flooding of messages, blocked or ignored players messages won't display, and you can "mute" channels, and they won't display either.
