Dose this game have any chat functions a way to talk to other players in the game? I'm very new to the game and found out that people don't respect other players.. in flight.. i was out flying around and just trying ti kill and get some cash. and some guy's just switched factions. i wasn't bothering them but the all the sudden just turned and started shooting me.. >< i have a starter ship and die pretty much in one hit.. And there no guide on where i can go to be safe until i can buy a better ship and outfit it with better gear... Love the game still just need some help understanding it.. not really any in game tutorials.

Currently there is no chat system in the game, but there will be eventually. You can read about planned features in the Design Discussion Archive (http://forums.frontier.co.uk/forumdisplay.php?f=36)

If you want to really be safe and try out the flying and combat features I would suggest playing the single player scenarios first before diving into multiplayer. There are no network issues and its only NPCs which will attack you there.
In the first two single player scenarios you are totally safe and will not be attacked until you attack first. (Well the canisters in the first scenario will not even shoot back

Just a minor point as some new commanders don't realise, the solid markers on the scanner are NPCs only the hollow ones are other players.
You might have already realised this, but we had a surprising number of posts talking about how another player had killed them and it turned out the name of that player was "Daisy Hal"
