Chat GPT and Elite

Thought people would find this interesting. Started using Chat GPT for Elite and basic questions since it works well in other areas. Tested a out a few topics for Elite and the answers are extremely helpful. It's a great tool to get a summary of all things Elite. My guess is they scraped this site along with devouring everything else on the web.

I asked it the best way to farm and find HGEs. Here is the answer. It even has the relogging trick. Worth a shot for other things if people have it.

Finding High-Grade Emissions (HGEs) in Elite Dangerous is essential for acquiring rare and very rare manufactured materials. Here are some tips to help you locate them:

  1. Look in Specific System States: HGEs are more likely to appear in systems that are in certain states, such as Famine, Outbreak, War, or Civil Unrest. Checking the system state using the galaxy map can help narrow down your search.
  2. Prioritize High Population Systems: Systems with a higher population tend to have more signal sources, including HGEs. Therefore, searching in these systems might increase your chances of finding HGEs.
  3. Use the Detailed Surface Scanner (DSS): Once you arrive in a system, use the DSS to scan the system. This will reveal all Unidentified Signal Sources (USS), including potential HGEs.
  4. Check the Time Left on HGEs: HGEs usually have a limited time before they disappear. Prioritize those with more time left to ensure you reach them before they expire.
  5. Relogging Trick: Some players use a technique where they log out and back in to reset the instance, which can sometimes respawn the HGEs. However, this might not always work and could be considered an exploit by some players.
  6. Use Third-Party Tools: Websites like EDDB.io or Inara.cz can be helpful for finding systems in specific states that are likely to spawn HGEs.
  7. Monitor System Factions: The minor factions within a system and their states can also affect the spawn rate of HGEs. Systems with multiple factions in a state that spawns HGEs might have a higher chance of spawning them.
  8. Join Community Groups: Elite Dangerous has an active community, and joining forums or groups can provide up-to-date tips on finding HGEs.
  9. Stay Patient: Finding HGEs can sometimes be a time-consuming process, so patience is key.
Remember, the game can receive updates that might change how some mechanics work, so staying up to date with the latest game changes is always beneficial.

You
What would you respond when someone uses chat gpt for the first time and expects others to be impressed, despite having seen it around for years beforehand?

ChatGPT
You could respond with a friendly and encouraging tone, acknowledging their excitement while gently highlighting that ChatGPT has been around for a while. For example:
"Hey, it's great that you're trying out ChatGPT! It's been around for a few years now, and many people have had interesting experiences with it. If you have any questions or want to explore specific topics, feel free to ask. It's always fun to see what new conversations and ideas come up!"

Been using it for years. Not sure what your point is. Anyway, for those that haven't, it's a great additional resource.

Perfect example of how ChatGPT fails to actually understand the question you are asking. It just regurgitates the most common garbage it finds. Sometimes it's right, oft times it's not. Would be funny to see the vid of the noob that tried that maneuver. Of course, not as funny as the (at least 2) rl lawyers that have put imaginary precedents cooked up by ChatGPT before rl judges in actual cases.

The lawyer example is the best. Citing cases that don't exist. Sure way to lose the case lol.

I think it's more of a resource instead of absolute fact, especially for games. It's certainly better than the simple forum search mechanics on game forums. The summary aspect is great. I think it also helps if you know something about the topic to avoid the scanner scenario you mentioned.

Yep. Also, 1 is missing some very important detail and has a major flaw on what info it does provide, 4 is right about the situation but arguably wrong advice, 5 is so unspecific as to essentially be useless, 6 is outdated, 7 is a repeat of 1 (it manages to be more accurate on the second try, at the cost of not actually including anything actionable), 8 is basically just "why are you asking me, I don't know, ask someone who plays the game", and 9 is at best very poorly worded.

So that leaves 2 as "possibly right". And I'm only giving it something that generous because I haven't been in enough high-population systems recently to be able to verify it...

I think it also helps if you know something about the topic to avoid the scanner scenario you mentioned.
Certainly the best use is if you already know the answer and therefore don't have any need for what you're told to be accurate or complete.

A player on a discord I frequent discovered that Pharma Isolators spawned regularly in POI where the timer had under 15 mins left. Since they always went to the ones with most time left ... they never found them before.

Or to put it another way, maybe rare materials have shorter lifetimes?

No, when you search forums you get the OP stating something and then 400 people correcting them. You can quickly judge for yourself whether the original post is even halfway accurate.

When ChatGPT spouts realistic-sounding word salad cribbed from a million contradictory posts, there's no counter-argument from real humans with first hand knowledge presented underneath it.

Been using it for years. Not sure what your point is. Anyway, for those that haven't, it's a great additional resource.
Mmm...what the point to play the game if you check external guides? Never understood it. Personally I check the guides when something urgent happens, like I was requested to tank boss, I fail, important people are nervous, then I'll check the guide.
Otherwise, I prefer to find out everything meself.

I use ChatGPT to format paragraphs for presentations. I don't always like the outcome but it's passable for people still working on the 1st cup of coffee that day.

Nope, not really.

Look in Specific System States: HGEs are more likely to appear in systems that are in certain states, such as Famine, Outbreak, War, or Civil Unrest. Checking the system state using the galaxy map can help narrow down your search.

HGE are related to the Faction state not System State (which is not wrong, but it's extremely incomplete since a system can have 7-8 factions, each with their own state and each faction able to generate their own HGE)
Famine does not generates HGE

Monitor System Factions: The minor factions within a system and their states can also affect the spawn rate of HGEs. Systems with multiple factions in a state that spawns HGEs might have a higher chance of spawning them.

Yea, but for the wrong reasons IMO.
if you want to hunt for the really rare materials (PI, IC and MSC) - you'd better try to find systems with only factions having ONLY the desired state and preferably NOT in an Imperial or Federation system. Having a faction with multiple states (and/or multiple factions in different states) will only thin out the chances you getting the material you want.

The problem with ChatGPT is that it can throw out fantasies instead of accurate information, especially if the sources contain conflicting information.
Even to this day, lots of people seem to be having a hard time gasping how HGE works... Inara including (which most often than not will have people chasing ghosts in systems that may have the lowest chances for that specific material to pop, not the highest ones)

You:Should you farm HGEs in Elite Dangerous?

Chat AI GPT:Hello! Farming High-Grade Emissions (HGEs) in Elite Dangerous can be a good way to gather materials for engineering modifications. HGEs can provide rare and high-quality materials that are essential for upgrading your ship's modules. However, it can be time-consuming and may not be the most efficient way to gather materials for engineering. It ultimately depends on your playstyle and goals in the game. If you enjoy the process of hunting down HGEs and collecting materials, then it can be a rewarding experience. Just keep in mind that there are other methods available for acquiring materials as well. Let me know if you need more information on this topic or anything else related to Elite Dangerous!

You heard it right here folks, farming HGE's isn't the most efficient means to gather materials
